Windows 11 2023 Update (also known as version 23H2) is a major feature update for Windows 11, which was released as an enablement package for Windows 11 2022 Update on 31 October 2023. It is the last Windows feature update supported by processors that do not have the instructions SSE4.2 (for AMD64) or FEAT_LSE (for ARM64). It is also the last Windows feature update to include WordPad as a default RTF reader, have support for ARM32 apps on compatible ARM64 processors and have support for Windows Mixed Reality.

Main changes[edit | edit source]

User interface[edit | edit source]

  • Windows Copilot, an AI-powered personal assistant that can interact with the user and the computer akin to Cortana, has been added.
  • File Explorer has been slightly redesigned to include more modern interfaces. These include the updated header UI and the new Gallery page.
  • The taskbar now supports app ungrouping again, after it was omitted in the original release.
  • The volume mixer has been moved to the Quick Settings menu.
  • Widgets now allow for the MSN feed to be disabled, and more layout options have been added.

Applications[edit | edit source]

  • Windows Backup, which allows users to create a full backup of their computer on OneDrive, has been added.
  • Dev Home, an app designed to more efficiently set up and maintain a development environment, has been added in preview.
  • Paint has been updated to support dark mode, as well as layer-based editing and improved zooming options.

Miscellaneous[edit | edit source]

  • The ability to customize RGB peripherals directly from the Settings app has been added.
  • Dev Drives, ReFS-based virtual disks optimized for development workloads, are now supported.

Moments[edit | edit source]

Moment 5[edit | edit source]

The Moment 5 update (build 22635 while in Beta Channel) was released to the public on 29 February 2024 with the release of build 22631.3235 (KB5034848) as an optional update. This update contains new commands and plugins for Copilot, an AI-powered Generative Erase feature for Photos, support for custom voice commands and shortcuts for Voice Access, automatic suggestions for snapping and the ability to ink directly into text boxes.

Several changes have been made to comply with the European Digital Markets Act (DMA):

  • Microsoft Edge, Photos, Cortana and Camera apps are now uninstallable.
  • Windows Search is now interoperable and supports third party plugins for web searching.

These features are only available for users in the European Economic Area (EEA).
