The initial release of Windows 10 Mobile (version 1507; codenamed Threshold) was planned to ship alongside the desktop version of Windows 10 in mid-2015. However, it was skipped due to problems surrounding logistics and stability concerns, leading to a pushback of the Windows 10 Mobile launch to November 2015. As such, builds of the original release were only exclusively released to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), beta testers, Windows Insiders and software developers.

Development and cancellation[edit | edit source]

Version 1507 was originally planned to release with support for a wider pool of mobile devices, which included phones running the Windows Phone 8 operating system. At the same time, Microsoft was also working on several additional features that were planned for inclusion, the most notable one being a native Android application compatibility layer dubbed Project Astoria, which aimed to support applications built up to and against the Android 4.4.4 API set; the feature entered closed beta status as part of build 10166 (fbl_impressive)'s release, a point too late for potential inclusion in the planned RTM build.

Tight deadlines and concerns surrounding overall system stability, as well as logistical problems surrounding the development of the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL (which were the then-unannounced flagship devices), led to the company dropping support for Windows Phone 8 devices and ultimately delaying Windows 10 Mobile's release, despite the operating system having a reached a point where it could have effectively been declared "gold", which further included the distribution of dedicated software development kits and OS emulator images (of which shipped as optional downloadable components for Visual Studio 2015's initial release). The feature set that was also planned to ship with version 1507 was also significantly cut down, with some planned features arriving late (as part of version 1511) or being scrapped entirely.

Code related to some scrapped features was later repurposed to serve as the foundations of features that achieved similar goals on desktop editions, such as the Windows Spotlight feature and the initial Windows Subsystem for Linux release (WSL1), itself based on Project Astoria code.
