Windows Embedded 7 is a family of Windows 7-based operating systems developed by Microsoft. It succeeded the Windows XP-based Windows Embedded 2009 operating system line. The line consists of both the Standard and POSReady operating systems, which were released in April 2010 and September 2011 respectively.

In a similar fashion to the previous release of Windows Embedded, there are two variants of Windows Embedded 7:

  • Windows Embedded Standard 7: intended for use in embedded industry systems like ATMs and devices for the healthcare and manufacturing industries.
  • Windows Embedded POSReady 7: intended for use in Point of Sales machines like cash registers, ATMs and self service checkouts.

Since these operating systems are lightweight and intended to be used in embedded systems, most features that are found in the original release of Windows 7 were removed due to a lack of necessity for industrial use.
