Windows Server 2022 is a long term servicing channel release of Windows Server, which was released on 18 August 2021.[1] Despite sharing the same version string of "21H2" with both Windows 10 November 2021 Update and the initial release of Windows 11, it is based on the Iron codebase rather than Vibranium or Cobalt, respectively. It includes Azure hybrid capabilities, the replacement of Internet Explorer with Microsoft Edge, TPM 2.0, UEFI Secure Boot, Boot DMA Protection, DNS-over-HTTPS and Server Message Block (SMB) compression.

With Windows Server 2022, the Essentials edition is available to purchase from OEMs only, although there is no specific installation media or actual SKU as a Standard edition product key is instead provided. The Hyper-V Server SKU was replaced by the subscription-based Azure Stack HCI release, which provides an integrated on-premise platform resembling Microsoft Azure.
