Windows Mobile 5.0 is a version of Windows Mobile, which was released on 9 May 2005. The first device it was offered on was the Dell Axim x51. It uses the .NET Compact Framework 1.0 SP3, which is an environment for programs based on .NET.

New features and changes

• Included some "push" functionality improvements for Microsoft Exchange Server. It requires Exchange 2003 SP2 or higher. Only some devices were supported.
• A new persistent storage function was introduced. This now makes the OS run applications in the RAM of the device, while the storage was stored in the flash memory.
• Content is now backed up in the flash memory, so if the power is cut off to a device, no data is lost.
• Introduced Adaptation Kit Upgrades, which function similarly to service packs in the desktop and server versions of Windows.
• Included a new special version of Microsoft Office called Microsoft Office Mobile, which included mobile versions of PowerPoint, Excel, and Word.
• Enhancements to media management and playback were made with the Picture and Video package, which included a mobile version of Windows Media Player 10.
• New hardware features, including enhanced Bluetooth support, default QWERTY keyboard support and a new management interface for the GPS.
• Improvements to ActiveSync 4.2, which increased the performance of the synchronization up to 15%.
• A new error reporting facility was included, similar to the version that is present in desktop and server versions of Windows.
• Caller ID now supports photos, so users can apply images to a contact to show if a call is received.
• Added a native version of DirectShow.
• This is the first release to include DirectDraw with hardware acceleration.
• Pocket MSN can now be viewed directly from the "Today" screen.
