Windows 10 Mobile is a phone-oriented version of the Windows 10 family of operating systems, which was released on 16 November 2015.
It is the last release of the Windows Phone OS as Microsoft ceased development of the operating system in October 2017 due to diminishing interest and application development for the platform and instead began to prioritize in software development and integrations with competing mobile operating systems.
On 21 December 2018, Microsoft announced that support for Windows 10 Mobile would cease on 10 December 2019,[1] although it was later extended to 14 January 2020 to match the end-of-life timeline for Windows 7.
Update system[edit source]
Windows 10 Mobile updates were distributed via Windows Update as cabinet packages in the following extensions:
.spkg
,.spku
and.spkr
as an upgrade from Windows Phone 8.1 (although, in certain circumstances, this can also be used to upgrade from an existing version of Windows 10 Mobile)..cbs
,.cbsu
and.cbsr
as an update from an existing version of Windows 10 Mobile.
Most internal Windows 10 Mobile builds were released to beta testers through public Windows Update infrastructure, although only if the host device had a specific "super secret registry key" (SSRK) installed. It is currently (as of writing) still possible to download and install these builds.
Some of the currently available builds also depend on the presence of the Microsoft.Tools.StudyID1510
feature. If a build is pushed to a device without it installed, the servicing stack will fail to process the update due to failing dependency checks.
