- Back to Windows build FAQ or main navigation
This page provides recommended configurations for installing builds in a specific emulator or hypervisor. This page is by no means exhaustive, and your mileage may vary, so you may have to adjust some settings to your liking as it sees fit.
Overview
For early DOS-based Windows releases (Windows 1.0 to 3.1x), Windows 9x releases (Windows 95 to Me), and early Windows NT releases (Windows NT 3.1 to 4.0 and early Windows 2000 builds), it is recommended to use 86Box to install these builds.
For later versions of Windows (Windows 2000 and above), it is recommended to use VMware or VirtualBox.
See Windows build FAQ § How do I run non-x86/x64 versions of Windows without having a machine that supports it? for installing non-x86/64 versions of builds.
Refer to Setting BIOS date for instructions on setting the BIOS date on the system.
Note that this page assumes you already know how to install Windows. For instructions on installing Windows, see Windows installation guide.
Notes
86Box
- In order to properly configure networking, the proper addresses must be set in the network setup as described in the 86Box documentation.
- Avoid using the default "RAM Disk [max. speed]" option for the hard drive speed, as it can cause problems on certain Windows versions due to performing instructions faster than some applications or drivers can support. Instead, use the RPM speed closest to the year of the build's compilation.
- Unless mentioned, leave each other setting as their default values.
- For best results, use the latest developer release of 86Box.
- Certain component names may change or be removed in later versions of 86Box, so certain configurations may not be compatible with all versions of 86Box. Most configurations are also not interchangeable with PCem or VARCem.
VMware
- For server counterparts, use the same configuration mentioned with the client counterpart, but set the operating system as the server equivalent. Refer to the operating system's version page to find the equivalent client counterpart.
- Guests for earlier versions of Windows tend to run better on earlier versions of VMware. Using later versions of VMware may break compatibility for certain virtualized version of Windows, such as Milestone 3 Longhorn's Desktop Composition Engine, and Windows Vista build 5231.
- Not all builds will work with the latest version of VMware Tools. Use an older version specified in the notes of the virtual machine configuration if stated.
- It is recommended to remove the floppy disk for Easy Install (or prevent it from connecting on power on) before starting the VM to install a beta build, especially if Easy Install detects the wrong operating system version, otherwise it may conflict with setup. This is especially notable for x64 builds of Longhorn, which Easy Install usually identifies as an x86 version of Windows XP Professional and will therefore cause setup to throw errors when attempting to install x86 drivers.
- How the VM will run will greatly depend on your host computer's hardware specifications and your VM's compatibility configuration, particularly the host's processor and graphics adapter. For instance, Windows 9x will encounter increased system instability on VMware if run on AMD processors, whereas most x64 builds of Longhorn will either become more unstable or refuse to run on Intel processors. Additionally, Desktop Window Manager may not work properly on all host systems, and may result in significant graphical artifacts being displayed, a black screen upon enabling Aero/DWM effects, the DWM service crashing, or the guest itself crashing in its entirety.
- Unless properly turned off, installing VMware Tools will sync the system time to the current time.
- The
.vmx
file can be accessed by right clicking on the virtual machine on the Library and selecting "Open VM directory".
VirtualBox
- For server counterparts, use the same configuration mentioned with the client counterpart, but set the operating system as the server equivalent. Refer to the operating system's version page to find the equivalent client counterpart.
- 3D acceleration is notably more limited on VirtualBox than on VMware:
- Avoid using unattended install for beta builds, as it may conflict with how setup will run. This is especially imperative for Longhorn builds.
- Unless otherwise stated, the IDE controller to use is PIIX4 and the SCSI controller to use is LsiLogic.

It is recommended to use MS-DOS 3.3x or 4.01 with Windows/386 2.11 to make use of the 386 enhancements. HIMEM of MS-DOS 5 and higher causes Windows/386 to not start due to the extended memory already being in use. Otherwise, launch WIN86.COM to start Windows in standard mode. Use the "IBM Personal System/2 Model 80" computer option during setup.
A Trident TVGA 8900D display driver disk is needed to use the graphics card.

A COMPAQ Portable Diagnostics Disk is required in order to set up the BIOS information on the system. COMPAQ's OEM release of MS-DOS 3.31 is recommended as the MS-DOS version, which requires a COMPAQ User Programs Disk.
To start setup for build 14, run SETUP C:\WINDOWS on the installation media (which should be in drive B:). For build 33, copy the contents of each floppy onto a new directory on the hard drive, such as WINDOWS. After setup is completed, use FASTART to add the line device=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS and modify the files line to files=40 in CONFIG.SYS and save the settings to both CONFIG.SYS and FASTART.

|
A MSCDEX 2.23 (MS-DOS CD-ROM driver), S3 Vision964 and Realtek RTL8029AS driver installer are needed to use the CD-ROM drive, graphics card, and network card.
A network card only functions in Windows for Workgroups 3.1 or 3.11, or on Windows 3.1/3.11 with the Workgroup Add-On, otherwise, you can set the network card to None. For Internet access, you will also need to install the TCP/IP stack for Windows for Workgroups 3.11.
The Sound Blaster 16 driver needs to be installed manually from the Drivers Control Panel applet (where "Sound Blaster 1.5" should be selected) or via Creative Labs' Sound Blaster 16 driver installer.

Create a setup bootdisk by using the MAKEDISK boot A: command from the installation media (does not apply for build 196). With the bootdisk still inserted in the floppy drive, select "NT CDROM SCSI ID 2" on the OS Loader to load the GUI setup.
To get the VESA driver to run on build 196, see Windows NT 3.1 build 196 § Super VGA support. On the October 1991 build and build 239, the Video 7 VRAM II driver will be compatible with the display adapter and give 800x600/1024x768 display on both builds, respectively.

Notes
|
Depending on the boot disk media type for the build you are installing, you may need to invert the floppy drive types to work best for the floppy disk type of the installation media (3.5" 1.44 MB drive as first floppy drive (A:), 5.25" 1.2 MB drive as second floppy drive (B:)).
On some builds from 340 to 438, the S3 driver may not work properly. If this happens, switch the display adapter to [ISA] Trident TVGA 8900B and install its drivers from Windows NT Setup in the Program Manager.
The TCP/IP Transport should be installed for Internet access.

The Standard PC HAL should be used, or ACPI should be disabled for early builds (builds 2202 to 2419), otherwise setup can hang on "Setup is starting Windows 2000/Whistler". Either press F5 when setup prompts to "Press F6 if you need to install a 3rd party SCSI or RAID driver" and select Standard PC, or disable ACPI in the .vbox file via the VBoxManage modifyvm <name of VM> --acpi off command.
On builds earlier than build 2410, Windows will be in 640x480x16 display at first boot. To get higher display resolution and color depth, install the Windows NT video miniport driver found here.

hdwwiz.cpl is missing on builds 4081, 4082, and 4083, making Device Manager broken. This file should be ported to these builds from build 4074 to properly install the drivers. Additionally, you must boot into "Enable VGA Mode" via the F8 Advanced Boot Options menu after installing the graphics drivers on 408x builds, otherwise Windows will crash with a 0x000000B4 bugcheck.

This configuration applies to all versions of Windows 10, from the original v1507 release up to the latest Windows 10 version.
If you are installing a beta build of Windows 10, it is recommended (required on v1507 to v1703 builds) to disable the network adapter until you can be able to turn off the online time sync on the Date and Time settings to prevent activating the timebomb from online time sync. Also see Windows build FAQ § Windows 10 TH1 to RS2 - Recovery screen with error "A component of the operating system has expired" after setup.
Vibranium-based Windows 10 builds newer than 1904x.2006 cause a bugcheck on VMware's NVMe drives. SCSI must be used instead.
