iOS 18 (codenamed Crystal) is the eighteenth version of iOS that was released on 16 September 2024. It was first announced at the WWDC keynote on 10 June 2024.

New features and changes[edit | edit source]

Apple Intelligence[edit | edit source]

iOS 18 introduces Apple Intelligence, which adds several generative AI features to supported devices.[a]

  • Siri has been completely overhauled, featuring richer language understanding and awareness for user requests.
  • Introduced Image Playground, which is an image generator that can be used in supported apps. It is also used for the Genmoji feature.
  • Writing, rephrasing, summarizing tools have been added.

Home screen[edit | edit source]

  • App icons and widgets can now be placed anywhere on the Home screen.
  • New customization options have been added for app icons and widgets, such as dark mode variants and color tinting.
  • Users can now lock and hide apps behind Face/Touch ID. Hidden apps are placed in a special category in the App Library.

Control Center[edit | edit source]

  • Customization has been revamped, allowing users to move and resize toggles directly from the Control Center.
  • The Controls gallery has been added, which can be used to quickly view and add toggles.
  • Multiple pages can now be utilized for separating controls.

Messages[edit | edit source]

  • Introduced Send Later, which allows users to schedule a message to be sent at a specified time.
  • On supported devices, users can now send and receive messages through a satellite connection.
  • Support for RCS (Rich Communication Services) messaging has been added.
  • Text effects and additional formatting tools have been added.
  • Emojis and stickers can now be used for Tapbacks.

Photos[edit | edit source]

  • The Photos app has been completely redesigned with a brand new user interface.
  • Introduced Collections, which enables the ability to browse by topic (such as time, people, memories, and trips).

Safari[edit | edit source]

  • Introduced Highlights, which will display relevant information from a site such as directions and quick links.
  • A table of contents and high-level summaries have been added to the Reader.

Notes[edit | edit source]

  • Math expressions can now be solved directly within the Notes app.
  • Audio recording and live transcription features have been added.
  • New formatting options have been added.

Journal[edit | edit source]

  • Mental well-being can be logged directly from a journal prompt.
  • Insights have been added for viewing journaling stats, such as writing streaks.

Home[edit | edit source]

  • HomeKit devices can now be assigned for guest access.
  • Pacific Gas and Electric Company customers can now view their home electricity usage.[b]

Wallet[edit | edit source]

  • Introduced Tap to Cash, which can be used to make in-person payments without having to share contact information.
  • Event tickets have been redesigned to include event guides.

Calculator[edit | edit source]

  • The Calculator app is now available on iPadOS.
  • The Calculator button has been added. By pressing on it, a menu of the following options appear:
    • Basic: The original calculator.
    • Scientific: The scientific calculator, being the replacement of the widescreen basic calculator.
    • Math Notes: Solves written math equations. Notes are saved to the Notes app and can be viewed in the "Math Notes" folder.
  • Built-in unit and currency conversion has been added.
  • The "History" page have been added. It can be accessed by swiping to the right or pressing the history button located at the top-left.

Accessibility[edit | edit source]

  • Eye Tracking, which allows users to navigate their device using their eyes.
  • Music Haptics, which helps users who are deaf or hard of hearing to experience music through the iPhone's Taptic Engine.
  • Vocal Cues, which can be used to assign custom utterances that Siri can understand to launch shortcuts and complete complex tasks.
  • Vehicle Motion Cues, which is designed to reduce motion sickness while looking at the screen in a moving vehicle.
  • Voice Control, Color Filters, and Sound Recognition features have been added to CarPlay.

  • Lock screen toggles can now be customized.
  • The ability to record and transcribe a phone call has been added.
  • Game Mode has been added, which minimizes background activity to sustain high frame rates, as well as dramatically reducing latency with wireless accessories.
  • Introduced Repair Assistant, which will calibrate genuine Apple replacement parts to function properly in a device.

  • Introduced the Passwords app for managing passwords, passkeys, verification codes, and security alerts.
  • InSight has been added to the Apple TV app, which will automatically display actors and music while watching Apple Original content.
  • Freeform now includes scenes, which allows users to organize and present their board by section.
  • The Maps app now features topographic maps with detailed trail networks and hiking routes.
  • New categorization and sorting options have been added to the Mail app.[b]
  • Integration with the Reminders app has been added to Calendar.
