OS X Mavericks, or OS X 10.9, is the tenth major release of the OS X operating system that was released on 22 October 2013. It was announced on 10 June 2013 at WWDC.
It is the first OS X version to be released as a free upgrade on the App Store. It is also the final version of OS X to feature a skeuomorphic user interface design.
New features and changes[edit | edit source]
- App Nap was introduced, which sleeps apps that are not currently visible.
- iCloud Keychain stores a user's usernames and passwords.
- Added native support for sharing with LinkedIn.
- Added Compressed Memory.
- Added Timer coalescing.
- Added support for IPoTB Thunderbolt networking.
- Removal of Open Transport API.
- Enchancements to the Calendar app.
- AirPlay compatible displays such as the Apple TV can be used as an external display.
- Finder has acquired tabs, fullscreen support, and document tags.
- New apps were added: iBooks and Maps.
- Removal of several skeuomorphic elements.
- Improvements to Notification Center.
