macOS Catalina, or macOS 10.15, is the sixteenth major release of macOS that was released on 7 October 2019. It was announced on 3 June 2019 at WWDC. The version drops support for devices that can be updated by replacing the graphic cards from OpenGL to Metal, as well as support for 32-bit macOS applications. It is the first version of macOS to support only 64-bit applications and also the final version of macOS to use the major version number of 10. It is the first version of macOS to fully drop support for OpenGL compositing in the compositor library (SkyLight.framework).
