OS X Yosemite, or OS X 10.10, is the eleventh major release of the OS X operating system released on 16 October 2014. It was announced on 2 June 2014 at WWDC. This version includes major interface overhauls, replacing the older, skeumorphic icons with newer, flat ones that resembled the designs on iOS 7.

New features and changes[edit | edit source]

  • The user interface has been redesigned and the skeuomorphic design that was present in previous versions was removed in favor of a flat design. The icons of various apps were updated to correspond with the icons of iOS 7. The design of the Dock was redesigned and is now a 2D translucent rectangle instead of a skeuomorphic glass shelf, which resembles the Dock in early versions of OS X. The new UI also includes blurred translucency effects.
  • The default system font has been changed from Lucida Grande to Helvetica Neue.
  • The Dark mode option was added which makes the Dock and menu bar darker.
  • The Today view has been added to the Notification Center. It displays information and updates from various sources along with widgets.
  • The UI of Spotlight was redesigned and the search box is displayed at the center of the screen. It also can include search results from various online sources.
  • Continuity has been added, increasing its integration with iOS and iCloud.
  • Handoff has been added which allows the OS to integrate with iOS devices over Bluetooth LE and Wi-Fi.
  • The Photos app has been added in version 10.10.3, which replaces iPhoto and Aperture.
  • Safari received various enhancements.
