Windows XP build 2419 (idx02.010113-1154) is a pre-Beta 2 build of Windows XP. Its free/retail compile was released to testers on 23 January 2001.[1]
New features and changes[edit | edit source]
Windows Setup[edit | edit source]
The Setup process has received major uplifts compared to build 2296. This includes a new Luna-esque Setup design, which is mostly similar to the version used in the RTM build. This theme contains a blue background and a dark blue top and bottom bar, along with the Whistler wordmark and logo being shown on the top left. The color of the progressbar has also been changed from blue to orange to accompany the design. The step indicator alongside highlighted text, now includes checkmarks that mark which step has already been completed.
The font used for Setup has been reverted back to Tahoma after the change to Arial in build 2211. However, the Arial font will remain when upgrading to this build. New billboards were also introduced, with localization changes done to existing boards and the upgrade setup.
Out-of-box experience[edit | edit source]
Continuing on with the evolution of the Luna design, the background of the Out-of-box experience was updated to a cloud-like design. Along with this, the top and bottom bars received white and orange lines, seperating them from the main content.
Localization changes and polishing were done to the OOBE steps, like renaming "1st User" to "Your name". Merlin also no longer specifies to press the Finish button at the end of the OOBE.
Boot screen[edit | edit source]
A new boot screen was introduced, featuring a monochrome Windows flag and wordmark on a black background. Under the wordmark, there are four animated bars in the colors of the Windows logo, which phase in one-by-one and then phase out in the same fashion. The boot screen now also fades in at the beginning and unlike the final animation it also fades out at the end. The entire animation is achieved by modifying the colors in the VGA palette, similarly to the Windows 9x boot screen.
The graphic used by this build, which still features the old Windows logo, was very shortlived. Build 2428, which was compiled only two weeks later, already features a new boot screen using the new Windows logo, albeit with the same animations.
Activation[edit | edit source]
The Windows Product Activation application has been added to the Start menu. However, at this point in development, the Activation algorithm has not yet been fully implemented, causing the grace period to be set to zero days.
Ever since this build, each beta tester has also received an unique product key in an effort to prevent leaks.[2]
User interface[edit | edit source]
Icon set[edit | edit source]
To accompany the Luna design that would be added in the next build, an additional subset of Luna-themed icons was added.
Themes[edit | edit source]
The Sample Test Visual Style theme has received a slight update. It now includes a slightly modified Start Menu design, which now includes a green or blue topbar, depending on the selected variant of the theme. The taskbar now also contains a fade in animation when switching themes.
[edit | edit source]
The start menu received minor changes. This includes removing the "using" prefix underneath the Internet and E-mail options, instead only displaying the name of the program itself, as well as making the text bold for folders with the My prefix.
Windows Explorer[edit | edit source]
Explorer received minor updates. The option to hide or show Tasks, Other Places and Details is now a triangle instead of a -
or +
symbol, the banner showing the name of folders or disks has been removed, and files in large folders are now seperated alphabetically. Alongside this, minor localization changes were also done to most aspects of the program.
Control Panel[edit | edit source]
The home page of the Control Panel has had it's "Other Control Panel Options" option removed. Previously mentioned Explorer changes, like the removal of the "Control Panel" banner have been integrated as well.
Automatic Image Resizing has been added as an option to the Internet Options.
Wallpapers and user account pictures[edit | edit source]
New wallpapers were added. These include Azul, Bliss, Follow me (later known as simply Follow in build 2465 onwards), Moon flower, Red moon desert and Vortec space. The leftover Windows 2000 wallpapers have also been removed, with the exception of the Windows Me branding wallpaper (known as Windows 2000).
Along with the new background images, a new set of user account pictures (used in the final release of Windows XP) have been added to the operating system, replacing the previous set of placeholder colored shirt account pictures.
Windows XP Tour[edit | edit source]
A prototype version of the Flash-based XP tour is now included and located in C:\WINDOWS\Help\Tours
. It includes animated looping images of flowers and astronauts with the title of HelloWorld and a non-functional link in the bottom left.
Help and Support[edit | edit source]
A new "Did you know?" section was added to the Home page of the Help and Support application. This section displays links to the newest help and support content.
Miscellaneous[edit | edit source]
- Spider Solitare and Hearts (not to be confused with Internet Hearts) have been added to the system.
- The copyright date in
winver
and Command Prompt has been updated to 1981-2001 and 1985-2001 respectively. - SAPI was updated to version 5.1.3528.00.

(0xF1
) bugcheck code, which would later be renamed toSCSI_VERIFIER_DETECTED_VIOLATION
.
Bugs and quirks[edit | edit source]
Task Manager[edit | edit source]
The Windows Task Manager may not render correctly if visual styles are currently being used.
Screensavers[edit | edit source]
The 3D Text and 3D FlowerBox screensavers fail to launch due to a memory write error.
Logon[edit | edit source]
The Windows subsystem might crash with an access violation when logging off and then logging back on.
Sample Test Visual Style[edit | edit source]
- The Blue Lagoon color scheme identifies itself as the Chartreuse Mongoose scheme.
- The Sample Test Visual Style is not complete and may exhibit graphical artefacts in specific applications.
