Windows XP build 2428 is a pre-Beta 2 build of Windows XP. It was released to testers on 13 February 2001 alongside its server counterpart, which followed several days after.[1] The Personal SKU of this build was mentioned in a BetaArchive topic, but it remains unleaked.[2]

Release notes[edit | edit source]

Release notes

Corrupt file[edit | edit source]

The CAB header of MDMSSYS.IN_ has been overwritten by the UUIDREF identifier, most likely due to a bug in the stamping implementation.

New features and changes[edit | edit source]

Boot screen[edit | edit source]

A new boot screen has been introduced, featuring the new Windows flag and wordmark positioned against a black background. Underneath the wordmark are four animated bars in the colors of the Windows logo, phasing in and out individually. Present at the bottom is a small disclaimer stating the operating system is pre-release code, followed by a copyright notice below it. The Microsoft logo was also added to the top right corner.

Windows Setup[edit | edit source]

The previously mentioned four animated bars are now present in the bottom right corner of the Setup, acting as a progress indicator.

The Setup autorun has been modified to no longer be in full screen and to include the Luna design. As such, it now looks very similar to the final release. The functionality of the app however remains the same.

Out-of-box experience[edit | edit source]

The font used for the title text in the Out-of-box experience was changed from Arial to Franklin Gothic. The options for connecting the computer directly to the internet or through a LAN or home network were also swapped, with the former and latter now being on the bottom and top respectively.

The "Windows Product Activation" page title was reworded to form a question that asks the user if they would like to activate the operating system, whereas the user account creation page has had its options reduced to a yes/no confirmation dialog.

User interface[edit | edit source]

The user interface received a major design overhaul, with the new Luna theme (known as the Whistler theme in this build) now being incorporated into the system. This theme however, contains visible differences to what would be later seen in later builds, like a brighter start button or an orange highlight when hovering over options. Alongside this, the new Windows XP flag was introduced. The old Windows flag is still however used by many resources, like on the welcome screen or on the winver banner.

The Watercolor and Experimental visual styles have been removed from the compiled OS, with their resources remaining present in the source code up to the RTM build.

Red moon desert is now used as the default desktop background after the use of Watercolor in previous builds.

Login screen[edit | edit source]

The login screen has been visually refined to use the previously mentioned Luna theme. As such, the sidebar was removed to comply with the design. The "welcome" text and user account options were moved to the center, where the user can pick their desired user on the right, while the text is present on the left. The Windows wordmark and logo were also added to the top right.

Windows Explorer[edit | edit source]

The icons used for the Standard Buttons toolbar were enlarged. These icons have also been updated to have a design similar to the final release.

Windows Product Activation[edit | edit source]

Windows Product Activation is now functional and prevents logon after 14 days of installation. Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking and Safe Mode with Command Prompt however bypass this requirement. This requirement can be disabled by setting the value of ActivationRequired in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon to 0.

Miscellaneous[edit | edit source]

  • Windows 98 / Me and Windows 2000 can now be set as a compatibility option in the Help & Support app.
  • If a driver does not pass Windows Logo Testing, the system now creates a System Restore point before installing the driver.

File differences[edit | edit source]

The following files have been introduced or removed compared to build 2419 Professional:
