Windows Me build 2419 is the official Beta 2 release of Windows Me. This build includes new Control Panel applets and MSN Messenger 1.0. Outlook Express has been updated from version 5.01 to 5.5 to match Internet Explorer 5.5.
New features[edit | edit source]
Compressed folders[edit | edit source]
Windows Explorer can now open and create compressed folders (ZIP archives), a feature that was previously only available as part of Microsoft Plus! 98. However, it's not installed by default and has to be manually selected on the component list during setup or later in the Add/Remove Programs control panel applet.
Windows Media Pad[edit | edit source]
Just like build 2416, this build also contains a pre-release build of Windows Movie Maker called Windows Media Pad, but it isn't installed by default. The installation procedure is identical to the previous build.
Other changes[edit | edit source]
- 3D Pinball for Windows – Space Cadet is now included.
- Add New Hardware Wizard has been updated.
Bugs[edit | edit source]
Windows Explorer[edit | edit source]
Windows Explorer can be prone to crashing or hanging in this build, making this build quite difficult to use in some cases.
SoundBlaster drivers[edit | edit source]
SoundBlaster 16 or AWE32 drivers may not be installed automatically, requiring the user to manually add a new device.
S3 drivers[edit | edit source]
When using S3 video adapters, Windows will complain that its own drivers will not work properly, thus the display will be stuck at
640x480x4bpp. This error will also appear upon every boot and other drivers cannot be installed correctly, meaning that S3 video adapters are not recommendable for this build.
Neptune reference[edit | edit source]
Two files, namely
wstdecod.dll, with the version number 5.50.5099.1 were found in this Millennium build, but it is unknown whether this Neptune build ever existed.
Some speculate this could be a late Milestone 1 or an early Milestone 2 build. Judging by the file dates, it would have been compiled before 17 November 1999.
