About dialog | |
Windows 11 build 26227 is a build of Germanium, the 24H2 development semester of Windows as a service. It was released to the Windows Insiders in the Canary Channel on 30 May 2024 alongside its server counterpart.
New features and changes[edit | edit source]
Copilot[edit | edit source]
Starting from this build, Copilot in Windows works as a standalone web-based application, instead of being accessed through an anchored sidebar or a separate window based on Microsoft Edge. It was firstly announced during the Microsoft Build 2024 conference.[1] The Copilot app is not installed as a system component and consequently can be uninstalled in user side.
As part of these changes:
- The Copilot button has been moved back to the center of on the taskbar rather than on the right side of the system tray (initially implemented in build 23585.1001).
- The ⊞ Win+C keyboard shortcut for invoking Copilot no longer works with devices without a Copilot key.
- The pre-release badge on the Copilot icon has also been removed.
Recall[edit | edit source]
Recall, a new AI-powered feature that automatically takes snapshots and builds a searchable timeline of the device's past activities, has been partially implemented. It bears a resemblance to the Timeline feature, which was initially introduced in Windows 10 build 17063 but retired in Windows 11. This feature is currently only available on ARM64 devices with an NPU capable of up to 40 TOPs, although unofficial workarounds are in the works to make it run on unsupported devices.[2]
As part of this change:
- A new Recall & snapshots subpage has been added under the Privacy & security page in the Settings app for managing snapshots and filter lists.
- A new page has been added to the out-of-box experience for prompting users to enable the Recall feature after setup completes.
Shell[edit | edit source]
The user interaction of the Windows Spotlight icon on the desktop has been slightly adjusted. Right-clicking it will now launch the Spotlight UI without any change to the desktop set up, while double-clicking it will launch the Spotlight UI in fullscreen mode. This change is disabled by default, but can be activated manually by enabling the 49140016
velocity staging key.
Settings[edit | edit source]
- The "Enhance pointer precision" option and the "Scrolling direction" dropdown menu in the legacy Mouse Control Panel applet have been ported to the Bluetooth & devices > Mouse page. This change is disabled by default, but can be activated manually by enabling the
48433719
and50012660
velocity staging keys. - The System > AI components page, initially implemented in build 26016.1000, has been rolled out to all users and is now fully functional in this build.
- The Accounts > Linked devices page, initially implemented in build 22635.3495, has been ported to this build and gradually rolled out. This page is only available on the Home and Pro SKUs with a Microsoft account signed in. It can be activated manually by enabling the
47448915
and48546544
velocity staging keys.
Input[edit | edit source]
The support of inputting emoji characters based on the Unicode Emoji 15.1 standard via the emoji picker has been added. This is consistent with the new version of the Segoe UI Emoji font (version 1.45) which has been previously implemented in build 25967.1000.
Bugfixes[edit | edit source]
General[edit | edit source]
- Fixed an issue that was causing the ⊞ Win+W keyboard shortcut to not work correctly and open the Widgets board.
- Fixed an underlying issue that was causing some apps to not start on startup even though they were enabled as startup apps under Apps > Startup in the Settings app. It would show as Suspended in Task Manager, but not appear on the taskbar.
Shell[edit | edit source]
- Fixed an issue believed to be the underlying cause of stutters in some animations recently (dropping frames), particularly with Task View.
- Fixed an underlying issue that was causing the pop up asking for permission to use location to not appear, which could lead to app issues without location access.
- Fixed an issue that was causing frequent
explorer.exe
crashes when pressing Alt+Tab ↹ to switch between a very large number of File Explorer tabs. - Fixed
explorer.exe
crashes impacting live captions and voice access.
Bugs and quirks[edit | edit source]
- Users may be unable to perform an in-place upgrade to this build via Windows Update in builds 26040, 23620 and earlier due to a deadlock that occurs during the initial preparation process.
- When performing a clean installation via the UUP-converted installation media of this build on VMware, VirtualBox and Hyper-V (Gen 2) virtual machines, the system may fail to boot after the initial setup process. Disabling Secure Boot may resolve this issue.
- Text on highlighted items in Microsoft Management Console and some of its snap-ins may have a yellow color.
