New features and changes[edit | edit source]

Boot screen[edit | edit source]

A new boot screen was introduced, intended to replace the version used since build 2428. This boot screen enlarges the Windows logo and wordmark while adding color to the Windows flag. As such, the four colored bars were replaced with a "loading..." string phasing in and out.

The Microsoft logo was moved to the bottom and a new "version 2002" label is present in the bottom left corner of the screen. As the system is now in the Release Candidate 1 stage, the "Beta 2 Release" text was also removed.

Windows Setup[edit | edit source]

The Windows Whistler Beta 2 reference at the beginning of Setup was changed to display Windows XP RC1.

Out-of-box experience[edit | edit source]

The "Will you be sharing this computer with others?" page was completely removed from the out-of-box experience, with the "Who will use this computer?" page now appearing immediately after instead.

The setup assistant can now explain what to do on the final page and how to activate Windows from the desktop.

Upgrade setup[edit | edit source]

A new note specifying that the computer will restart several times during the installation process was added to the first page of the upgrade Setup. A red-colored progressbar is now also displayed before the first restart.

The step indicators were changed to use radio buttons instead of checkmarks in the 16-color copying stage.

User interface[edit | edit source]

Almost all Whistler references in the Setup and user interface were replaced with Windows XP. The taskbar is now also locked by default with Quick Launch being disabled alongside it.

Login screen[edit | edit source]

The animated Windows flag located on the login screen now functions. This flag waves for ~5 seconds after log off before stopping.

Desktop[edit | edit source]

Desktop icon labels now utilize a shadow by default instead of a solid color backdrop.

Control Panel and Windows Explorer[edit | edit source]

A checklist icon was added to the background of the Category View in the Control Panel. The option to not cache thumbnails was also added to the Folder Options applet.

The throbber used in Windows Explorer, Internet Explorer and Outlook Express was updated to use the Windows XP logo. The "Looking for your programs?" text was also renamed to "These files are hidden...".

Start menu[edit | edit source]

A new "My Recent Documents" option was added to the start menu, which includes the most recent files opened by the logged on user. Alongside this, a "My Videos" folder was added, which by default contains a Movie Maker sample video. All image thumbnails showing off the taskbar or start menu were also updated in the Taskbar and Start menu properties.

The icons in the Classic start menu have been shrunken in size along with the banner receiving its final appearance.

Sample pictures and Wallpapers[edit | edit source]

Five new sample pictures were added, which include: Crew, Mountain vista, Orange canyon, Surfer and Winter (known as Winter forest in this build and up to build 2485). These sample pictures (except for the Winter picture) would be later replaced by their RTM counterpart in build 2486.

The Follow me wallpaper was renamed to Follow.

Shutting down screen[edit | edit source]

It has now been finalized to the main version; in this build, no shadow is seen on the Windows logo.

Windows Product Activation[edit | edit source]

Windows Product Activation has been updated to include the Luna design. This design, like the out-of-box experience, uses a dark blue top and bottom bar separated with orange indicators, along with an icon of keys in the background.

Windows XP Tour[edit | edit source]

The Windows XP Tour is now in full screen by default.

Miscellaneous[edit | edit source]

  • The brush is now set as the default paint tool in Paint.
  • MSN Messenger was updated to version 4.0.
  • Bugcheck codes 0xEE (PREFETCHER_POOL_ERROR_BUGCHECK) and 0xF0 (PREFETCHER_PROCESS_REFERENCE_BUGCHECK) were both removed.[2] 0xEE would never be reimplemented, while 0xF0 would be reassigned as STORAGE_MINIPORT_ERROR during the development of Windows 10 Creators Update.
  • The Bugcheck font has been changed.
  • New bugcheck codes have been added:
    • FLTMGR_FILE_SYSTEM (0xF5)
    • The PCI driver has detected an error in a PCI device or BIOS being verified. (0xF6, later renamed PCI_VERIFIER_DETECTED_VIOLATION)

Bugs[edit | edit source]

Upgrade[edit | edit source]

When upgrading to this build, setup may complain that the network driver cannot be found. Pointing to driveletter:\windows\system32\drivers and then pressing OK will typically resolve this error.
