Windows XP build 2442 is a beta 2 build of Windows XP. Prior to its publication, it was uploaded to the Chinese website BetaWorld on 18 December 2014 and was mentioned in various posts on the Chinese Software Developer Network (CSDN), including a thread about installing drivers for a modem from May 2001[1] and two threads about timebomb removal from July 2001.[2][3] It was later shared in Simplified Chinese by the aforementioned website on 15 August 2021.[4]
On 20 October 2020, BetaWorld user MacAdmin uploaded a picture of a Chinese warez CD labeled "KEE-044" containing the build.[5] A higher-resolution picture of the same CD was then uploaded by BetaWorld user 随便问我 on 24 October 2020.[6] This is currently the earliest shared Chinese build of Windows XP.
New features and changes[edit | edit source]
Windows Setup[edit | edit source]
The branding used in the setup and out-of-box experience has been updated to include the Windows XP flag first introduced in build 2428. The orange progressbar used in the GUI setup has also been made larger.
A pre-OOBE message is now shown while the OOBE is initializing. It contains the boot screen with the text "Please wait..." underneath.
User interface[edit | edit source]
A flat blue color is now used in place of the default Red moon desert wallpaper. This change would be later reverted in build 2446.
This is also the earliest available build to contain a reference to the final name of the system. The reference is located in ssdpsrv.dll
, which reads \Windows XP UPnP/1.0 Control-Point/1.0
.
CD playback[edit | edit source]
The CD Player application has been removed and replaced with the CD playback functionalities of Windows Media Player.
Bugcheck codes[edit | edit source]
This build massively overhauls the bugcheck screen, largely to clean up redundant bugcheck codes that had messages in their contents and move message-related bugchecks that were assigned as normal bugcheck codes into messages.[7]
Bugcheck codes 0xAD
to 0xB3
and 0xDD
, which were all named a variant of BUGCODE_PSS_MESSAGE_##
(with ## being the bugcheck code the message was to correspond with), have all been merged with the bugcheck codes they were intended for, while their original slots were deleted, rendering them undefined. This in turn replaces any of the overwritten bugcheck names to include just the instructions for the user if they encounter said error. The following bugchecks were affected:
KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
(0x1E
)FAT_FILE_SYSTEM
(0x23
)DATA_BUS_ERROR
(0x2E
)NO_MORE_SYSTEM_PTES
(0x3F
)INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE
(0x7B
)UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP
(0x7F
)ACPI_BIOS_ERROR
(0xA5
)
Bugcheck codes 0x7C
, 0x8C
to 0x8E
, and 0xD2
were also all removed, having their addresses largely moved to the message codes.
0x7C
(BUGCODE_PSS_MESSAGE
) was split into two messages for the "if this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen" and user instruction messages, being placed at0x40000081
(PSS_MESSAGE_INTRO
) and0x40000082
(also namedBUGCODE_PSS_MESSAGE
).0x8C
to0x8E
, which is the messages for theSAVEDUMP.EXE
progress, has been moved to0x4000008B
to0x4000008D
, retaining their original names and messages.0xD2
(BUGCODE_ID_DRIVER
) was moved to0x40000080
with its original name. It also mentions the specified driver at fault as a file.
A new message with message code 0x4000007F
was added, named BUGCHECK_MESSAGE_INTRO
. This introduces the infamous "A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer" message that is shown at the start of a bugcheck.
Bugcheck code 0xD0
was renamed to its final name, DRIVER_CORRUPTED_MMPOOL
. Finally, a new bugcheck code was added, The system does not shutdown in a deterministic manner so bugchecks can occur.
(0xF3
), which would later be renamed to DISORDERLY_SHUTDOWN
.
Bugs and quirks[edit | edit source]
- The system crash screen text is mostly garbled due to Chinese characters being displayed with the wrong codepage. Additionally, most of the bugcheck codes that aren't messages are not translated.
- The username in the start menu overlaps with the user's avatar.
