Windows 8 build 8438 is a build of Windows 8, which was uploaded to BetaArchive on 4 January 2019. It is the last build of Windows 8 to use the Windows 7 sound scheme. Despite the build number being higher than the official Developer Preview 8 build, it was compiled a day earlier.

This build notably belongs to a branch that is intended for development of Internet Explorer, specifically for backwards compatibility with versions 7 and 8 which is evidenced by the usage of the longhorn sub-branch. This also applies to build 8330.

  • Elements in Internet Explorer 10 have been updated to match the new visual style.
  • New multitasking gestures have been introduced for tablets.
  • Picture password setup has been updated to resemble its RTM version.
  • Icon frames for Desktop applications have been made brighter on the Start screen.
  • The Win key onosk.exeis changed from flag to trapezoid.
