Windows Vista build 5342.2 is the official February CTP Refresh build of Windows Vista, which was released to beta testers on 24 March 2006. It is the last build to include the wallpapers and user icons from Windows XP.

New features and changes[edit | edit source]

Setup[edit | edit source]

  • The copyright date on the autorun window has been made smaller.
  • The fonts used on the installation type page have been made richer.
  • Upon booting into the second stage of setup, the AUTOCHK boot screen appears with the message that Windows is setting up your computer, which was found in the pre-reset builds (up to build 4074) of Windows Longhorn.

Sidebar[edit | edit source]

  • The Windows Sidebar includes a few new gadgets such as Calculator, Minesweeper, number & picture puzzles, and a timer.
  • Add and Back/Next buttons are now positioned towards the top.

Games Explorer[edit | edit source]

  • The "Hardware" drop-down has been renamed to "Tools".
  • The game tile for Purble Place has been updated.

Control Panel[edit | edit source]

  • Control Panel layout has slightly changed with new text on the Category View and removed icons from the Classic View.
  • "Ease of Access" was renamed to "Ease of Access Center" and received an interface overhaul.
  • In the Programs category, the "Installed Updates" section now uses a unique Windows Update icon rather than the "Installed Programs" icon.
  • Color Management no longer has a "General" tab.

Miscellaneous[edit | edit source]

  • The "How to Share Feedback" link has been renamed to "Feedback".
  • The "Shut Down Windows" dialog box no longer grayscales the background.
  • Help and Support Center has an updated homepage, which resembles that of the RTM.
  • Disk Cleanup received a new icon.

Bugs and quirks[edit | edit source]

Installation[edit | edit source]

  • Although this build can partition properly during setup, the partitioning page doesn't refresh properly, requiring a reboot in order to see the new partition.
  • After restarting from the first portion of setup, it can take up to 3 minutes for the boot screen to appear.

Stability[edit | edit source]

  • Installing the x86 version of this build can result in high instability. Installing this build on VMware will lead to an "unexpected error" upon booting into setup, while on VirtualBox it will lead to high instability issues, however it is possible to install without any modifications. On real hardware, this build is extremely unstable and often crashes upon doing simple tasks, such as installing drivers and opening up applications. The out-of-box experience is also incredibly unstable and can crash quite easily.
