Changes[edit | edit source]

  • Restarting during GUI setup no longer results in a bricked install, as a newly added sprestrt.exe restores the registry to the settings before GUI setup, which is invoked by smss.exe if Windows detects a failed install.
  • This build introduces a new-style login dialog, which replaces the one used in Windows NT 3.51 and below.
  • This is the first known build of NT to have DirectX support.
  • This is the first build to introduce the "System Properties" (SYSDM.CPL) and the "Accessibility Options" Control Panel applets, as with Windows 95.
    • The System Properties applet also inherits the ability to add a third string below the version number by using the Plus! VersionNumber registry string in HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows NT/CurrentVersion from Windows 95. It is normally used to fill in the version number of an installed copy of Microsoft Plus! However, as Plus! was never released for Windows NT, this string was later used by Internet Explorer 4 and later to fill in its version number. This feature was later removed by Windows 2000 build 1515.
  • "Dial-Up Networking" has been added to the desktop.
  • This build introduces Imaging developed by Wang Laboratories, which was later bought by Kodak.
  • WordPad is now installed by default and fully replaced Write. The executable file for Write still exists, but it redirects to WordPad instead. It will remain, however, if upgrading to this build.
  • The "Select Components" page of setup is now fully functional.
  • The icon set from Microsoft Plus!, stored in COOL.DLL, has been introduced.
  • The Start menu banner has been updated to resemble the RTM.
  • Changed the version number on the boot screen from 4.00 to 4.0.
  • This is the first build to introduce the RTM style of Task Manager, although the entry in the Ctrl+Alt+Del security options is still named "Task List".
    • It notably displays a warning that it should not be run during benchmarking.
  • Windows NT Setup no longer works after installation and instead displays the information that system settings should be configured in the Control Panel.
  • Added the SYSTEM_LICENSE_VIOLATION (0x9A) bugcheck code. This seems to be a continuation of the recently added END_OF_NT_EVALUATION_PERIOD bugcheck code from build 1166 to crash the system if a trial period or the system's SKU was tampered.

Bugs[edit | edit source]

  • When upgrading from build 1234, you will be asked to overwrite newer files, due to these included in this build have an older version number than the files included in the previous build. This affects BMP, ANI, CUR and Pinball files and happens in the final phase.
  • When logging off, shutting down the system or invoking the Ctrl+Alt+Del security options, sometimes the desktop icons will remain in place.
