Windows 8 build 7814 is a build of Windows 8. This build was shared on the BetaWiki Discord server on 30 September 2021. Prior to this build being shared, a screenshot was included with the original upload of build 7746 on 3 May 2020. It is the earliest available build to include the Redpill feature locking mechanism. It is also the earliest available build of Windows to include a confidential build warning in the watermark.

Due to its earliness, many areas still say "Windows 7" and the kernel version is still 6.1 (much like builds 7700, 7746, and 7850). The default background image of this build is a blue gradient with a green tint at the lower right and a message at the top advising Microsoft employees not to leak this build.

Setup[edit | edit source]

This is the first build to contain a new setup assistant. It is stored on the root of the installation media as setupclient.exe alongside with the older client. Like its predecessor, it requests a product key and installation type, but does not cover the entire desktop with a wallpaper. The modern setup assistant would eventually replace the legacy client in later builds; however, the aforementioned legacy client can still be accessed by booting off of installation media or launching the setup.exe executable in the sources folder. For some reason, the copyright date on the modern setup assistant is 2012 instead of 2010. Windows 8 was released on the mentioned copyright date so, it is unknown if it was there to tease the release year of the OS or if it was a typo.

Redpill[edit | edit source]

This build is the earliest available build to implement Redpill.

The Start screen in this build is rather primitive, having only one view featuring every installed application with a tile. It also includes a button to bring up an early search pane. A very early and non-functional snap UI is seen when you exit from the Start screen. A primitive Charms bar is also implemented and is accessible by pressing Win+C on your keyboard, but it is non-functional. New folder icons, along with a preview grid, are present in this build when Redpill is enabled. The next build's Metro is almost identical to this build.

Other features include:

  • Explorer Ribbon UI
  • User tile (located next to Show Desktop)
  • Centered title bar text
  • Explorer up button
  • Built-in PDF reader
  • Built-in USB xHCI drivers
  • Built-in UASP drivers
  • Modern Task Manager
  • Full-screen webcam application
  • ISO mounting functionalities
  • Theme auto-colorization
  • Application Explorer shell location (Applications.{4234d49b-0245-4df3-b780-3893943456e1}) - tabs include "Tile state" and "Host environment". This is where the Start screen app list is stored, even up to 8.1.
  • Aero Lite (labeled "Windows Classic")
  • Early version of Internet Explorer 9
  • Certificates and digital signatures that recognize the SHA256 algorithm
  • New Disk Cleanup (diskclean.exe)
  • System Reset (sysreset.exe)
  • Inclusion of Hyper-V in the Professional and Ultimate SKUs
  • Personalized lock screen
  • Portable Workspace Creator (pwcreator.exe)

Findings, fixes, enhancements[edit | edit source]

PDF Reader[edit | edit source]

There is a preliminary version of the Immersive Reader included, accessible by running C:\Windows\System32\glcnd.exe with any PDF file as an argument (or without any argument to open a blank page).

Modern Windows Task Manager[edit | edit source]

A preliminary version of the Modern Task Manager is included as well. It is accessible by running C:\Windows\System32\TaskUI.exe.

Ribbon UI[edit | edit source]

A partial implementation of the Ribbon interface is present in Windows Explorer; albeit with placeholder icon resources.

Webcam Capture Application[edit | edit source]

An early version of the webcam capture application is included as well, accessible by running C:\Windows\System32\Webcam.exe.

Auto Colorization[edit | edit source]

Create a copy of a theme from C:\Windows\Resources\Themes, add AutoColorization=1 to the end of the [VisualStyles] section and apply.

Miscellaneous[edit | edit source]

The Getting Started application from Windows 7 has been removed.

Bugs and quirks[edit | edit source]

Installation[edit | edit source]

  • The background of both Setup and WinRE fails to display before the installation starts, instead showing a black screen.

Desktop Window Manager[edit | edit source]

  • The Windows Basic and the High Contrast themes do not properly render due to the enforcement of the DWM Aero theme.
  • The Aero functionalities do not work on VMware Workstation versions 14.0 and above due to changes that are incompatible with the graphics stack.

Timebomb[edit | edit source]

This build contains a non-functional timebomb and as a result can be installed on the current date.

Internet Explorer[edit | edit source]

  • The IE9 engine is unstable and will crash when accessing HTML5 websites.

Windows Help and Support[edit | edit source]

  • Starting with this build, when you open the Help and Support application, It will redirect to a page saying that Help and Support content navigation has failed because at this time, the application was undergoing a major reconstruction and in the search box, it said that search would be functional again after Milestone 2. It redirects the user to the Windows website to access help documentation.
