Windows 11 build 23511 is an Insider Preview build of Nickel, the 22H2 development semester of Windows as a service. It was released to Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel on 27 July 2023, along with build 25915.
New features and changes[edit | edit source]
Shell[edit | edit source]
- The new Spotlight UI, initially implemented in build 25197 and later refined in build 25324, has been rolled out to all users.
- The pop-up dialog to recommend automated Get Help troubleshooter to resolve camera streaming issues, initially implemented in build 25381, has been backported rolled out to all users.
- The redesigned preview tooltip when hovering over a file in the Start menu's Recommended section, initially implemented in build 25905 and later available in build 23506, has been rolled out to all users.
- The ability to label system apps under Start menu's All Apps section, initially implemented in build 23481, has been rolled out to a subset of users.
- A shortcut to Dev Home has been added to the Windows Tools folder under Start menu's All Apps section.
- The fly-in transition effect when switching between virtual desktops by pressing the key combination ⊞ Win+Ctrl+← or → has been made a bit smoother.
- The notification badges on the taskbar has been updated to a bell icon, in order to be consistent with the Do Not Disturb icon. It will be colorized based on the system accent color, and will show as an empty bell when no new notifications available. The badge counter has been removed as part of this change.
File Explorer[edit | edit source]
The performance when sending a large number of files at once to the Recycle Bin has been improved.
Settings[edit | edit source]
- The new "Phone Link" toggle switch under Bluetooth & devices > Phone Link, initially implemented in build 23506, has been rolled out to all users.
- Starting with this build, Remote Desktop Connection can be uninstalled via Apps > Installed apps.
Out-of-box experience (OOBE)[edit | edit source]
A new Presence Sensing toggle switch has been added under the Choose privacy settings for your device section. This change is disabled by default, but can be activated by enabling the 39484957
velocity staging key.
Miscellaneous[edit | edit source]
Starting with this build, Windows Copilot will be disabled by default on AAD-joined devices. It can still be enabled via the User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Copilot policy in Group Policy Editor.

- Fixed an issue where copying files out of large archive files or using the "Extract All" option may be slower than expected for solid

archive files. - Fixed an issue when decompressing some of the newly supported archive format types, the folder names would turn into gibberish texts.

- Fixed an issue that was preventing apps from opening when selecting inside a notification pop-up for that app.
- Fixed an issue that was causing a notification suggesting to turn off notifications for an app named

crashes that were impacting taskbar reliability. - Fixed an issue that was causing Quick Settings to not open when selecting the network, volume, and battery icons in the system tray.

Fixed the instability bug that occurs when opening the Home page in build 23506. As a result, the page has been re-rolled out.

Fixed an issue where writing in the address box in Microsoft Edge might not work correctly.
Bugs and quirks[edit | edit source]
File Explorer[edit | edit source]
Dragging the scroll bar or attempting to close the window during an extended file-loading process may lead File Explorer to crash.
Shell[edit | edit source]
- The Safely Remove Hardware icon in the system tray on the taskbar may sometimes disappear.
- The icons on the desktop may appear blank in certain cases. Refreshing the desktop would resolve this issue.
- Some non-system apps under Start menu's All Apps section, such as PWA apps installed via Microsoft Edge, may be labeled as system apps incorrectly.
Windows Copilot[edit | edit source]
- When pressing Alt+Tab ↹ to switch out of Windows Copilot, users may not switch back into it.
- When first launching or after refreshing Windows Copilot while using Voice access, users may need to use "Show grid" commands to click in the "Ask me anything" box for the first time.
Windows Ink[edit | edit source]
The following issues will only apply if the updates to Windows Ink introduced in build 23481 are enabled:
- The search boxes and comment fields in Microsoft 365 applications may not work correctly.
- Windows Ink may not convert handwriting to text into the main content in Microsoft 365 applications.
Dynamic lighting[edit | edit source]
Switching user accounts may turn off device LEDs.
Safe mode[edit | edit source]
