About dialog | |
Windows 10 build 18946 is an internal build of the Windows 10 May 2020 Update. It was unintentionally distributed to users enrolled into the Fast Ring on 24 July 2019,[1] along with two compiles of build 18947 from the rs_xbox
and rs_prerelease
branches.[1]
The build includes two significant changes to the user interface which are reminiscent of the design changes later found in Windows 10X and Windows 11.
Additional source packages for the x86 version of this build (featuring components for nearly all available client editions in the British English, French and German languages) were uploaded onto the Internet Archive on 1 February 2024.[2]
New features[edit | edit source]
This build notably features a completely redesigned Start menu and a new Control Center design that expands as notifications are received. Both have a similar look to later implementations in Windows 10X and Windows 11, but are disabled by default. The new Start menu, if enabled, replaces the All Apps view of the previous one and also features a version string of 1.0.19155.2 / Release
displayed at the top left of it. Unlike in Windows 10X and 11, though, it can also be launched while in Tablet mode.
The new Start menu design may be enabled by toggling on Velocity staging key 19908852
through use of the mach2 utility:
mach2 enable 19908852 -v 1
Similarly, the new Control Center design may be toggled on by merging the below value into the Windows registry:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Control Center]
"UseLiteLayout"=dword:00000001
