Microsoft Office XP is a version of Microsoft Office released to manufacturing on 5 March 2001 and to retail on 31 May 2001. This is the last version to ship with the Office Shortcut Bar introduced in Office 95 and to install the Office Assistant by default.

Office XP received three service packs, with the last being released on 30 March 2004. It is officially not supported on Windows 7 and later.

Differences from Office 2000[edit | edit source]

  • Added task panels to the UI.
  • The Office Assistant is disabled by default.
  • It is the last version to be compatible with Windows 98, Windows 98 SE, Windows Me, Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 RTM–SP2.
  • This version uses the Windows Installer 1.1, compared to version 1.0 in Office 2000. Additionally, its UI is now based on the Wizard 97 design.
  • Introduced Product Activation, as with Windows XP.
  • Internet Explorer 5.01 is required, and it will install before proceeding the installation of Office if it's not already on the system.

    • 128 MB for Windows XP and speech recognition
  • Hard disk space:
    • 210 MB (Standard)
    • 245 MB (Professional, Professional Special Edition)
    • 450 MB (Developer)
  • CD-ROM drive
  • Graphics: 800×600 SVGA with 256 colors; hardware accelerated video card or MMX processor recommended
  • Mouse and keyboard; touchscreen recommended for handwriting functionality
  • Audio output device required for multimedia effects; microphone additionally required for speech recognition
