Microsoft Office XP is a version of Microsoft Office, released on 31 May 2001. This is the last version to ship with the Office Shortcut Bar introduced in Office 95 and to install the Office Assistant by default.

Office XP received three service packs, with the last being released on 30 March 2004. It is officially not supported on Windows 7 and later. Mainstream support ended on 11 July 2006, extended support on 12 July 2011.

Differences from Office 2000[edit | edit source]

  • Added task panels to the UI.
  • The Office Assistant is disabled by default.
  • It is the last version to be compatible with Windows 98, Windows 98 SE, Windows Me and Windows NT 4.0. Service Pack 2 is now needed to install on Windows 2000.
  • This version uses the Windows Installer 1.1, compared to version 1.0 in Office 2000. Additionally, its UI is now based on the Wizard 97 design.
  • Introduced Product Activation, as with Windows XP.
  • Internet Explorer 5.01 is required, and it will install before proceeding the installation of Office if it's not already on the system.

  • Audio output device required for multimedia effects; microphone additionally required for speech recognition
