Windows 11 build 26231 (ge_prerelease) is a build of Germanium, the 24H2 development semester of Windows as a service. It was released to the Windows Insiders in the Canary Channel on 6 June 2024.
New features and changes[edit | edit source]
Shell[edit | edit source]
- The copy button in the Windows share flyout for copying files directly, initially implemented in build 22635.3575, has been ported to this build.
- The experience for displaying icon labels in the context menu has been improved on non-English locales.
Settings[edit | edit source]
The experience for changing user profile picture under Accounts > Your info has been revamped as the "Change profile photo" dialog, adding the ability to apply effects and filters to the picture, crop parts of it, and restore it to the default profile picture. This experience is partially functional and is disabled by default, but can be activated manually by enabling the 45189370 and 47364920 velocity staging keys.
Accessibility[edit | edit source]
The following features and changes to voice access have been added and rolled out to a subset of users:
- The ability to invoke Narrator commands.
- The ability to automatically restart voice access if it encounters any issues.
- New command for searching directly with Windows Search flyout.
Task Manager[edit | edit source]
The following features and changes to Task Manager, initially implemented in build 22635.3570, have been ported to this build:
- Improvements to overall reliability and accessibility of Task Manager.
- Change to the unit of DDR speed under the Performance page (from MHz to MT/s).
- Performance improvements for releasing process handles when terminating processes.
- Performance improvements for changing the sort order.
- Performance improvements for resizing Task Manager by grabbing the top of the window.
Bugfixes[edit | edit source]
Fixed an issue where the Safely Remove Hardware option for ejecting USB devices wouldn't work if Task Manager was open.
Bugs and quirks[edit | edit source]
- Users may be unable to perform an in-place upgrade to this build via Windows Update in builds 26040, 23620 and earlier due to a deadlock that occurs during the initial preparation process.
- When performing a clean installation via the UUP-converted installation media of this build on VMware, VirtualBox and Hyper-V (Gen 2) virtual machines, the system may fail to boot after the initial setup process. Disabling Secure Boot may resolve this issue.
- Text on highlighted items in Microsoft Management Console and some of its snap-ins may have a yellow color.
