Windows 11 build 25231 is the twenty-ninth Insider Preview and the twenty-third available client build of Copper, the 23H1 development semester of Windows as a service. It was released to Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel on 27 October 2022.

New features and changes[edit | edit source]

Taskbar[edit | edit source]

  • The tablet-optimized taskbar, previously re-introduced in build 25193, has been rolled out to all users.
  • The updated "Show hidden icons" experience, initially introduced in build 25211, has been rolled out to all users.

Settings[edit | edit source]

  • The changes to the spelling dictionary to use a language-neutral word list that will sync across all devices (toggle via Accounts > Windows backup > Remember my preferences > Language preferences), initially introduced in build 25179, have been rolled out to all users.
  • The backplate from UWP app icons in Apps > Default apps and Apps > Apps for websites has been removed.
  • The "Reset this PC" dialog (toggle via System > Recovery) has been redesigned in order to align with the design aesthetics of Windows 11. This change is disabled by default, but can be toggled on manually by enabling the 36390579 and 41598133 velocity IDs.
  • A new "Energy Recommendations" page has been added under System > Power to show recommended power settings for energy saving. This feature is disabled by default, but can be toggled on manually by enabling the 39427030 and 41249924 velocity IDs.

Task Manager[edit | edit source]

The process filtering feature has been implemented, with a search field showing in the title bar. The full process name, publisher, or PID is required for filtering under the Processes and Details pages. This feature is disabled by default, but can be toggled on manually by enabling the 39420424 velocity ID.

Miscellaneous[edit | edit source]

  • The improvements to cloud suggestion and integrated search suggestion in Simplified Chinese IME, initially introduced in build 25217, have been rolled out to all users.
  • The DPI-awareness when launching setup.exe from a mounted installation media has been improved to prevent the initialization logo from blurring in certain cases.
  • When loading Secure Boot policies, Boot Manager will now only attempt to load supplemental Secure Boot policies if it is known to possibly have an effect; that is, the loaded base policy knows of and allows the loading of at least one supplemental policy.

Bugfixes[edit | edit source]

General[edit | edit source]

  • Fixed a rare issue where FindWindow and FindWindowEx might return an unexpected window.
  • Fixed an issue that was causing FIDO to unable to unlock the device if it was connected to an external display with the laptop lid closed.
  • Fixed an issue which sometimes led to crashes in certain apps (such as Paint and Windows Terminal) when attempting to display a tooltip.

Shell[edit | edit source]

  • Fixed an issue when moving the mouse over the sound icon on the Quick Settings area, the tooltip won't display correctly when spatial audio is in use.
  • Fixed the font used on the Wi-Fi section of Quick Settings when Wi-Fi was off in order to be consistent with the other text in Quick Settings.

Settings[edit | edit source]

Fixed an issue believed to be the root cause of certain network cameras unexpectedly not being added when selecting them under Bluetooth & Devices > Cameras.

Bugs and quirks[edit | edit source]

General[edit | edit source]

  • The audio may stop working in certain cases.
  • Several apps may crash on launch in certain cases.
  • Users may encounter a SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION bugcheck with win32kfull.sys when interacting with UI components in WinPE or WinRE.

Tablet-optimized taskbar[edit | edit source]

  • The taskbar may sometimes flash when transitioning between desktop posture and tablet posture.
  • The taskbar may sometimes stay stuck in the expanded state instead of dismissing to collapsed state when using the bottom right edge gesture to see Quick Settings.

Shell[edit | edit source]

  • Various UI elements in apps may disappear and reappear repeatedly.
  • The text cursor may appear white on white when hovering over text fields.
  • The folders in Start menu may not open on the first try.
  • Several apps, such as Microsoft Edge, may unexpectedly show thick lines on the side of the window.
  • The navigation headings of Start's all apps list may contain garbled text in the Simplified Chinese language.
  • Opening the hidden icons flyout may result in a File Explorer entry for it appearing in the taskbar.
  • Several Chat apps may not flash with new messages or open a preview on hover in the system tray.
  • On some locales, the default font used in several UI elements (such as the date and time on the taskbar) may change to regular Segoe UI instead of Segoe UI Variable.
  • On some locales, some strings may appear pseudo-localized.

Widgets[edit | edit source]

In right-to-left display languages, the content may animate out of view before the Widgets board resizes when clicking to expanded view of the Widgets board.

Virtualization[edit | edit source]

  • Users may experience a UNSUPPORTED_PROCESSOR bugcheck when booting Windows in VMware on a Hyper-V enabled host with 2 or more cores allocated.
  • The system may fail to boot in VMware with attached network adapters.

Safe mode[edit | edit source]

  • Quick Settings and date/time clock on the taskbar may be missing due to the Capability Access Manager Service service not running.
  • Clicking Bluetooth & devices and Personalization pages may crash the Settings app due to an overrun of a stack-based buffer 0xc0000409.
