Windows 11 build 22606 is a build of Windows 11 2022 Update. It was mentioned in the metadata file Desktop_neutral_Forward_22606.1.ni_release.220420-1415.CompDB.xml when updating to build 22610.

The build number was also mentioned in a screenshot posted in the announcement page of the aforementioned build.[1] The full build was later shared on 19 November 2024. Prior to its publication, it was released to the Ecosystem Engineering Access Program (EEAP) on 27 April 2022.

This build was supposed to be released to Insiders, as it was build candidate (released on the internal FlightOpsPromoted channel), but then got cancelled and replaced by build 22610.

New features and changes[edit | edit source]

Shell[edit | edit source]

  • The tablet-optimized taskbar, which initially announced in build 22563, has been reverted for maintenance.
  • The icons for renaming and properties in the context menu and File Explorer's command bar have been updated.
  • The design of the battery icon on the Lock screen has been updated to be consistent with the one on the taskbar.
  • The estimated battery life timing will be shown in the tooltip for the battery icon in the system tray when available.
  • The ability to dismiss Quick Settings, Notification Center, and the hidden icons flyouts by clicking away from them has been added.
  • Starting with this build, the Home page in File Explorer will only show image and video thumbnails.
  • The tooltip for the "Please sign in" button in File Explorer has been updated to "One of your accounts needs attention to show files from Office.com in Home".
  • The touch keyboard will always appear on the login screen or in the UAC dialog when using touch and tap a text field during the out-of-box experience, even if a physical keyboard is connected.
  • The typographic quotes have been added as an option after a press and hold on the quote key when using the German touch keyboard layout.
  • If users have a window within a snap group that is set to display across all desktops, that setting will persist if users drag and drop the snap group into a different desktop in Task View.
  • The experience for invoking snap layouts from the top of the screen when dragging down on the title bar of a maximized window has been improved.
  • The reliability of using gestures from the edge of the screen when using an app full screen has been improved.
  • The performance of keyboard selection of images and zipped files in OneDrive folders has been improved.
  • The performance going into the listening state after launching voice typing has been improved.
  • The ability to place customizable stickers on the desktop, which partially implemented in build 22563, has been fully presented in this build.
    • It can be accessed by the "Add or edit stickers" option in the right-click context menu on the desktop, as well as under the Background page in the Settings app.
    • This feature is disabled by default, but can be enabled by applying the following registry value:
      [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\PolicyManager\current\device\Stickers]
      "EnableStickers"=dword:00000001

Widgets[edit | edit source]

  • The changes with widgets and news feed combining together as a dynamic blended feed, which initially announced in build 22563, has been rolled out to more users.
  • The Family Safety widget panel has been updated with new location sharing, app use and device use views.
  • A greyed-out weather icon will be shown by default if the weather status isn't available.
  • The reliability of opening the widgets board on first login after an upgrade or after an app update has been improved.

Settings[edit | edit source]

  • The Your Phone option under Bluetooth & devices page has been renamed to Phone Link.
  • When using the keyboard to control device's brightness or volume level, the flyout that appears will respect if users have turned animation effects off in Visual effects page.

Task Manager[edit | edit source]

  • The ability to show colors in the heatmap based on users' accent color in the Processes, App history and Users pages has been added.

  • The TKIP and WEP features, deprecated since build 22557, have been reactivated.

Bugs and quirks[edit | edit source]

Shell[edit | edit source]

The hidden icons flyout on the taskbar may disappear completely in some cases. Restarting explorer.exe may solve this issue.

Task Manager[edit | edit source]

Enabling Efficiency mode from the command bar may cause the process list to fluctuate between the Apps and Background groups in the Processes page. To bypass this issue, use the right-clicking context menu to enable or disable Efficiency mode then close and re-open Task Manager.

Widgets[edit | edit source]

The Widgets panel may not load as expected when using the swipe from left edge of screen touch motion.

Live captions[edit | edit source]

  • Certain apps in full screen (e.g., video players) may prevent live captions from being visible.
  • Certain apps positioned near the top of the screen and closed before live captions is run may re-launch behind the live captions window positioned at top.

Safe mode[edit | edit source]

  • Quick Settings and date/time clock on the taskbar may be missing due to the Capability Access Manager Service service not running.
  • Clicking Bluetooth & devices and Personalization pages may crash the Settings app due to an overrun of a stack-based buffer 0xc0000409.
