Windows 8 Beta build experiments[edit | edit source]

PDF Reader (glcnd) in Windows 8 build 7905[edit | edit source]

Run PDF Reader as a window[edit | edit source]

Open registry editor, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Applets\Paint\Capabilities, change CLSID from {656CF76D-B764-4C23-9CDE-EDEB2514ECA0} to {D3E34B21-9D75-101A-8C3D-00AA001A1652}. To get full screen mode again, revert the registry value to the original data.

PDF Reader key binds[edit | edit source]

  • Ctrl+F: Find text
  • Ctrl+D: View current page's thumbnail, PDF file name and total page count
  • F7: Toggle text selection/caret browsing mode
  • Ctrl+R: Rotate page
  • F6: View one page at once, vertical scrolling mode
  • F8: View two pages at once, horizontal scrolling mode
  • F9: Toggle page indicator bar
  • F10: ? (the cursor changes to normal arrow when I press it but I can't figure out the exact function)
  • Ctrl+P: Makes the Reader crash (probably unimplemented printing key)

Make Applications folder have an icon[edit | edit source]

Program compatibility list[edit | edit source]

  • Adobe Photoshop 7.0.1 (Korean version)
    • Working: 7899, 7950, 7955, 8056 (Might need to restart PC after installing)
    • Doesn't work: 8014, 8032
  • Adobe Illustrator 10.0.3 (Korean version)
    • Working: 7899, 7950, 8056 (Crashes on exit, needs to set compatibility mode to Windows XP or Vista)
    • Doesn't work: 8014, 8032
  • Adobe Premiere 6.5
    • Working: 7899
    • Requires setting compatibility mode to Windows XP or it will complain about low memory capacity
  • Adobe Premiere 7.0 (Premiere Pro 1.0)
    • Working: 7950
  • Media Center 2005 from XP
    • Fully Working: 7899, 7950, 7989, 8032, 8056
  • Windows Media Player 10 beta build 3409
    • Working: 7899, 7950, 8056
    • Doesn't work: 8014, 8032
    • Requires setting compatibility mode to Windows XP or Server 2003 (WINSRV03SP1) or else it will throw an error that WMP is not properly installed
    • It is not recommended to use this build of WMP 10 despite it having a unique and cool UI design because of its constantly high CPU and RAM usage (tested in build 7905, always using one whole CPU core and around 200-300MB RAM usage which is NOT normal at all).
  • Windows Media Player 10 beta build 3458 and 3473
    • Working: 7899, 7950, 7989, 8014, 8032, 8056

  • K-Lite Codec Pack 13.8.5
    • Working: 7899, 7950, 7989, 8032, 8056
    • In 7899, LAV Audio Decoder doesn't work for MPEG-TS videos. In other words, I can't watch my movies in .ts extensions properly because there is no sound. MP4 videos play audio properly. (Checked with WMP downgraded to WMP10 build 3409, which is techincally almost same as WMP9 just with different UI) But I found the solution [here] - open Codec Tweak Tool, go to MS Codec tweaks, check [disable MS DTV-DVD Audio decoder] and [disable MS DTV-DVD Audio decoder (64-bit)] and apply.
  • Nalgaeset Korean Input System (IME)
    • Working: 7899, 7905

  • Visual C++ 2015-2019 Redistributable
    • Working: 7899, 7950, 7989, 8056
    • Set compatibility mode of the installer to Windows Server 2003 (in 7989/8056 this can be done by modifying the registry in AppCompatFlags\Layers key) and right click and manually run as administrator or it will throw errors such as 0x80240017.

    • Doesn't Work: 7899, 7950, 7989, 8056

    • Doesn't work: 7973

    • Working: 7899, 7950

Unconfirmed bugs on Windows 7 and 8 Betas[edit | edit source]

Bugs that I personally experienced on my hardware installation but didn't check for other users.

6730, 6758[edit | edit source]

  • It might be unbootable on some hardware with 0x00000024 bugcheck on x64 builds.

6801[edit | edit source]

  • On some hardware, after second boot and restart, the partition table of the disk gets deleted and the user is forced to use a recovery software to recover them. (I tested 6801 on like three PCs and this bug happened on only one machine)

7899[edit | edit source]

  • BELL character (Ctrl+G) will play critical stop error sound instead of ding.
  • I can't include any other folders in built-in libraries. When using custom libraries, Only one folder can be included and trying to include two or more won't include any.
    • To include another folder in your library: Ctrl+C the library and paste shortcut in some other folder, drag it to Notepad, and add a new searchConnectorDescription element.
    • This seems to be fixed in build 7905. This is one of the few differences from 7899 I found.
  • Disabling Windows Error Reporting and closing some built in applications will crash and pop up that the appp has stopped working. (Happening applications: Registry Editor, Modern Task Manager, some more but I cannot remember)
  • When enabling the new copy dialog as the same way in build 7801, if you show more details and copy another file, the details aren't shown properly and requires to click fewer details and more details again.

7905[edit | edit source]

These are bugs present in 7899. Since I did an upgrade from 7899 to 7905 (in real hardware) I don't know if it's a bug of 7905 itself or is inherited from 7899:

  • CD-ROM drive opens when restarting.
  • Logon sound plays 3 times (when redpilled).
  • BELL character (Ctrl+G) will play critical stop error sound instead of ding.
  • In Your Look page, click <Browse for another picture> and click cancel in the open dialog and you will be moved to the main user accounts control panel page.

Office 2010 build 4302[edit | edit source]

Happens when running on both Windows 8 build 7899 and build 8056[edit | edit source]

  • You can't move SmartArt or charts in PowerPoint by dragging.
  • PowerPoint has a chance of crashing when moving SmartArt or charts using keyboard's arrow keys.

Happens when running on build 8056[edit | edit source]

  • PowerPoint crashes when trying to add a digital signature to the presentation file.
