About | |
Windows Media Player 12 is a version of Windows Media Player included as part of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 and later Windows versions. It is not available for any previous version of Windows. It is the last version of Windows Media Player as Microsoft ceased further development of the program after Windows 7 was released in 2009. In Windows 8 and later, its functionality has been superseded by Microsoft Movies & TV and Groove Music, which eventually took Media Player's name in 2021.[a]
Since Windows 11 2022 Update, the Windows Media Player application has been renamed to "Windows Media Player Legacy" in order to distinguish it from the modern Media Player application.
Trivia[edit | edit source]
- Leftovers of the Windows XP mode from Windows Media Player 11 still remain in this version of Windows Media Player, with varying degrees of functionality, depending on the version of Windows used. To enable this mode, one must use Application Verifier to spoof the OS version for
wmplayer.exe
to be 5.1.2600 or 5.2.3790. - Starting from Windows 10 version 1809 the fullscreen mode button becomes misaligned as a result of a bug.
