Welp, it doesn't look like we are at Beta 1 yet, but I think this
one was really damned close. MS actually bothered to send this
one off to be silk screened rather than burned the CD in house,
but the CD ultimately just calls this a Developer Release Update.

They probably planned on making this Beta 1, but perhaps found
some last minute stuff to clear up, its the only explanation I can
think of for this release being silk screened when it came with a
note saying (paraphrased) "This release doesn't exist, don't discuss
it in the beta forums or anyplace else. Nobody should be aware you
have this build." Beta 1 should be any time now....

And for people calling the builds with Beta 1 splash screens "Beta 1",
they are NOT beta 1. Anything that could possible be a Beta 1
candidate goes out with this splash screen. A candidate is something
that should it pass testing, can be released 'as is'. Would suck if
the developers didn't put Beta 1 into the splash screen, then it
passed beta 1 testing, then they had to go back, put the splash screen
back in, rebuild the CD, etc. They operate like every other software
house, when you deliver a release candidate of something, it needs to
go as is once its given the approval. (Some of you may recall in 95
when SCuM released a Release Candidate of Win95 that turned out to be
gold after MS gave it the stamp of approval... all an RC needs to
become something else is the go-ahead from management). There ya
go, a little lesson in the methodology involved in a software
	development cycle.

Changes[edit | edit source]

  • Reverted the boot screen to the Developer Release one seen in builds 1351, 1353 and 1387.
  • The Beta 1 label on the start menu banner was removed, so it is now simply labeled as Memphis.
  • The "Starting Memphis" boot message was reverted to "Starting Windows 95" (used in builds 1351 and 1353). The "Starting Memphis" boot message would come back in the next build.

Bugs[edit | edit source]

The message "Invalid setting in the MSDOS.SYS file: WINVER=4.10.1411 may appear before booting the system, though it does not prevent Windows from booting.
