Windows 98 build 1353 is the official Developer Release build of Windows 98, released on 5 January 1997[1] and was shared later by BetaArchive user marcoguy on 19 December 2016.[2]

Changes[edit | edit source]

DirectX 5.0 has been removed in this build.

Additional features[edit | edit source]

The installation files for these apps are included in the following subfolders in the /BETAONLY folder of the installation disc:

  • Internet Explorer 3.01 (4.70.1215)
  • NetMeeting 2.0 Beta 2 (4.00.1266) /NM20
  • Windows Scripting Host (CSCRIPT.EXE) 1.0 build 21 /WSH
    • VBScript Documentation /VBSCRIPT
  • ACPI Table Checker Hardware Compatibility Tool 0.9.01 /ACPITOOL
  • ATI Rage/Rage II display driver /ATIRAGE
  • Windows Sockets 2 SDK Beta Release 2a /WINSOCK
  • MSReport 1.1 (a bug reporting tool) /MSREPORT

The /MENUANI subfolder includes registry files to enable the slide menu animations, which were introduced in Windows Nashville build 999, as seen in Windows 98 and later.

The /BOOTFLOP subfolder includes files used for a bootdisk. However, AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS are named with a .CD extension.

Bugs[edit | edit source]

ACPI[edit | edit source]

ACPI support is in very early development and crashes easily. Turn off ACPI or setup can crash with a red screen of death during hardware setup (used in early builds for ACPI errors).
