Windows 8 build 7791 (fbl_core1_kernel) is a build of Windows 8, nine screenshots of which were included with the original upload of build 7746 on 3 May 2020. The build itself was shared on 13 August 2024.

This is one of the first builds to have a functional Start screen. It also introduces the Windows 8 PDF reader, and has a significant amount of code for the charms bar.

Setup[edit | edit source]

Out-of-box experience[edit | edit source]

The OOBE in this build, while visually similar to Windows 7, has several elements moved around. The first page now only asks for computer name, after which the network location setting appears, having been moved from the last position before the "finalizing your settings" screen. The user account setup then appears, where user account naming part has been moved there, and the HomeGroup setting page no longer appears if the network location is set to Home. The rest of the OOBE continues the same way as Windows 7.

Changes[edit | edit source]

Control Panel[edit | edit source]

The User Accounts page has received some changes. A new "Create a new connected account" option has been added to the Manage Accounts page of the User Accounts control panel. However, at this stage in development, it only opens a broken version of the Choose your look page.

Your Look[edit | edit source]

The old profile picture selection screen was replaced by the new Your Look page. It primarily serves the function of the old one, but was also enhanced with a few functions. The old list of user profile pictures was replaced with a folder view that shows a search query in the C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\User Account Pictures\Default Pictures and C:\Users\Public\User Tiles folders. As it's a folder view, at this point in development it's possible to right click on it and perform the same actions that can be done in any other File Explorer search. The Your Look page also saves the user profile pictures that the user sets in a Installed User Tiles section. However, at this point in development, not only external user tiles are saved, but also system ones.

Micellaenous[edit | edit source]

  • The dimensions of the About Windows dialog were changed so that it is more wide.
  • The blue screen of death can now display at 1024x768.
  • Files relating to the new input switcher toolbar (explorerindicator.dll and InputSwitch.dll) have been added. However, at this point, there is no known way to enable the new input switcher yet.

Redpill[edit | edit source]

Hidden features[edit | edit source]

PDF Reader[edit | edit source]

The Immersive Reader had it's filename changed to glcnd.exe. It is now accessible by running C:\Windows\System32\glcnd.exe with any PDF file as an argument (or without any argument to open a blank page). Furthermore, it's now possible to open a PDF file with the Ctrl + O keyboard shortcut, or open a search pane with the Ctrl + F keyboard shortcut.

Bugs and quirks[edit | edit source]

Installation[edit | edit source]

  • This build has trouble booting setup with a SATA DVD drive. It is recommended to boot from the installation media using an IDE DVD drive, a SCSI DVD drive or an USB Flash drive.
  • The background seen in the Windows Preinstallation Environment is absent in this build.

DWM and Aero[edit | edit source]

  • The Windows Basic and the High Contrast themes do not properly render due to the enforcement of the DWM Aero theme.
  • The Aero functionalities do not work on modern versions of VMware Workstation and above due to changes that are incompatible with the graphics stack. Using either VirtualBox or VMware with the 9.x hardware compatibility or older and using 9.x drivers or older is recommended.
  • Only the top portion of the window frame is blurred when using the Windows Aero theme, leaving the side borders transparent.

Help and Support Center[edit | edit source]

Help and Support Center is beginning to be reworked, so attempting to navigate to certain pages will lead to either an error or an message informing the user about a reconstruction to appear. The page redirects the user to online help hosted on the official Windows website while advising Microsoft employees to not file bugs about the current state of the application.

Start screen[edit | edit source]

  • The Start button on the taskbar still opens the old Start menu. The Start screen can only be opened using either the Windows key or Ctrl+Esc.
  • As a result of this, it's possible to have both the Start screen and Start menu open at the same time.
  • The Start screen doesn't resize itself when the user changes the resolution.
  • The Start screen shows up in Flip 3D at all times, and in the task switcher if the user has it open.
  • The tiles will have random positions and sizes.

Windows Explorer[edit | edit source]

  • When Redpilled, the Ribbon always shows Network, Computer and HomeGroup tabs, even when none of the corresponding folder is opened in the window.
  • The Recycle Bin might not update right away after deleting a file.

USB 3[edit | edit source]

Trying to boot this build with an USB 3 controller will cause it to hang on boot. It needs to be disabled in order for the build to boot.
