Windows 11 build 23451 is an Insider Preview build of Nickel, the 22H2 development semester of Windows as a service. It was released to Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel on 4 May 2023, along with build 25357.
New features and changes[edit | edit source]
File Explorer[edit | edit source]
- The redesigned user interface of the Details pane, initially implemented in build 25276, has been rolled out to a subset of users. As part of this change, a Details/Preview button has been added to the command bar for quickly opening the Details or Preview pane. These changes can be toggled on manually by enabling the

Widgets[edit | edit source]
- The following changes have been implemented to the widgets picker (toggleable via the

velocity ID):- Redesigned UI with a navigation pane and a visual preview of the selected widget.
- The ability to jump directly to the widget picker from the provider app or service.
- A new "Find more widgets" link to the widgets collection page at Microsoft Store.
- The animated Widgets entry point on the taskbar, initially introduced in build 25324, has been backported to this build.

- The ability to show recommended common websites based on user's region or browsing history under the Recommended section, previously introduced in build 25247, have been backported to this build. This feature is only available to a subset of users, but can be toggled on manually by enabling the

The non-functional "End Task" option under Privacy & security > For developers, initially introduced in build 23430, is functional in this build.

- The languages support has been expanded to include Danish, English (Ireland), French (Canada), Korean and Portuguese (Portugal).
- Features have been added to the enhanced speech recognition language files to improve performance and provide out-of-language filtering meant to limit the incorrect captions for speech not in the caption language.
Narrator[edit | edit source]
The support of Narrator announcements in Microsoft Excel has been implemented and can be customized via several new keyboard shortcuts.

- Fixed an
explorer.exe
crash impacting taskbar reliability. - Fixed an issue that was causing Quick Settings and its project options to sometimes not respond when using Alt+F4 to close them.
- Fixed an issue that was causing the Recommended section in Start menu to be blank the first time it was opened.
- Fixed an underlying issue that was causing Search to get stuck and not open.
- Fixed another 2FA code pattern which wasn't being recognized.

- Fixed an underlying issue believed to be the cause of
explorer.exe
crashing when opening the context menu in Windows App SDK-based File Explorer. - Fixed issues that was causing the tabs and the scrollbar for the Gallery page in Windows App SDK-based File Explorer to displaying incorrectly on right-to-left locales.
- Fixed an issue that was causing checkboxes on images under the Gallery page to not show properly, even if the Item Check Boxes setting is enabled.

- Fixed an issue where the Pinyin IME's insert text button wasn't displaying correctly in some cases.
- Fixed an underlying crash impacting the ability to launch the touch keyboard / PIN entry on the login screen.
Accessibility[edit | edit source]
- Fixed an issue where caption characters shown in the second line of the default height window were getting clipped on top.
- Fixed an issue where pressing ↓ while navigating by landmark with Narrator in Microsoft Edge wasn't jumping to the first line of the landmark correctly.
Bugs and quirks[edit | edit source]
File Explorer[edit | edit source]
- The access keys in the XAML context menu may appear inconsistently if no button is pressed. Pressing a button will cause them to reappear.
- Clicking on the Share command may bring up the Windows share sheet (non-OneDrive) when the file recommendations feature is enabled.
- The following issues will only apply if the Gallery page is enabled:
- The page may require clicking twice on the node in the navigation pane for initial load.
- Users may experience thumbnail loading performance for dehydrated cloud files and memory usage in large collections.
- Photos from OneDrive for Business currently must be hydrated to work properly.
- Some file types (e.g.,
.HEIC
) may not be rendered correctly or performantly.

- The content in the Search flyout may flicker before the content finishes loading.
- Narrator may not be able to navigate down the left side panel of the Search flyout.
- Text scaling may not work in the Search flyout.
Safe mode[edit | edit source]
- Quick Settings and date/time clock on the taskbar may be missing due to the
Capability Access Manager Service
service not running. - Clicking Bluetooth & devices and Personalization pages may crash the Settings app due to an overrun of a stack-based buffer
