Bugs and quirks[edit | edit source]

Build number overflow[edit | edit source]

This build is affected by an integer overflow of the build number, causing the build number 17000 to be truncated to 616 (sometimes formatted as 0616) across the system. The reason for this is that the two most significant bits of the build number (otherwise a 16-bit unsigned integer) were officially defined as reserved from as early as Windows NT 4.0 build 1264, artificially limiting the value to a maximum of 16384 (0x3fff). Microsoft promptly jumped back to build number 16350 upon encountering this bug, and only returned back to the 17000-series build range a month later after fixing the overflow.

This issue causes many version checks to fail, notably causing most AppX applications (including the Windows out-of-box experience) to fail registration and never launch, preventing installation from progressing further unless the system is patched.[b] Alternatively, it's possible to skip OOBE by creating an Administrator account via the Command Prompt and making changes in the registry.

Notes[edit | edit source]

  1. There are no Simplified Chinese language packs available for this build. To use the Enterprise G edition, the build's language applicability restriction licensing policies must be modified after applying the respective edition. Otherwise, the build will bugcheck with a MUI_NO_VALID_SYSTEM_LANGUAGE error.
  2. A patched version of the kernel is readily available here. It is required to disable integrity checks via the Advanced Options boot menu when using the patched kernel.
