This manual is assuming that you are using the 3.5" floppy version. The reference disk is available here.
1. Create a 86Box virtual machine:

Hard disks
  • Hard drive: 504 MB (1024 cylinders, 16 heads, 63 sectors) connected to ESDI (0:0)
Floppy & CD-ROM drives
  • Floppy drive(s): One 3.5" 1.44 MB drive
  • CD-ROM drive(s): None
Notes
You will need a IBM PS/2 model 80 reference disk to configure the system. After booting into the reference disk, It is recommended to partition and format the hard disk in MS-DOS.
2. Boot into the reference disk. After automatic configuration is complete, reboot again into the disk and set date and time.
3. Boot into a MS-DOS disk to partition and format the disk with fdisk and format.
4. Boot into the install disk. After booting, exit setup by pressing the Esc key and type in:
ren disk01.sys disk01.bak
copy disk01.esd disk01.sys
and reboot into the floppy again. Then, continue as usual. If then prompted to format the disk, answer "NO".
