OS/2 1.1 build 4.72 is a build of OS/2 1.1 that was included with versions 1.03 and 1.04 of the Microsoft OS/2 SDK. It is the earliest known build to include the Presentation Manager interface. OS/2 Museum posted several screenshots of this build in 2011,[1] and uploaded floppy images (in both the 3.5" and 5.25" variants) to the Internet Archive on 5 December 2022.[2]
New features and changes[edit | edit source]
- This is the earliest available build of Microsoft OS/2 to have the graphical Presentation Manager, a new GUI for managing and running OS/2 applications.
- Updated the boot screen to be colored green on 8514/a display adapters and changed the "Version 1.0" string to "Version 1.1".
- An SDK can be installed in this build, which appears to be sample applications primarily ported from Windows 2.x's SDK to run on OS/2.
- This is the first build to have a watermark.
Bugs and quirks[edit | edit source]
- Shutdown is incomplete and crashes the system, causing the speakers to repeatedly beep.
- Help is primarily incomplete.
- The system has a large chance of crashing upon exiting an OS/2 command line prompt.
- By default, setup will only detect SCSI drives. By replacing the
disk01.sys
file with eitherdisk01.esd
ordisk01.506
, ESDI hard drives and Model 50/60 hard disks can be used respectively. - After partitioning the disk and restarting the computer, exit setup after restart and format drive C:, as the user is not promted to do so. Then, restart again and continue as usual. If then prompted to format C:, answer "NO".
- Double-clicking the window menu to close a window has not been implemented yet, so the user has to select the "Close" command in the window menu.
