History[edit | edit source]
The OneNote has been announced by Bill Gates on November 17, 2002. In difference with Microsoft Word or similar programs, which were more purposed for document management, OneNote provides borderless canvas, where user can click anywhere to write notes, draw various shapes and separate notes by classifying them as separate sections.
One of the reasons for creating a significantly enhanced version of Sticky Notes were described at official announcement of OneNote:[1]
In a recent study by Microsoft Research, 91 percent of information workers surveyed said they regularly take notes; 26 percent of these note-takers transfer handwritten notes into e-mail, and 23 percent admitted they often can’t find the information they’re looking for. Of the respondents, 36 percent said they were ready for a better note-taking system.
Initially, Microsoft OneNote was shipped as a separate program, but with Office 2007 release it was merged with Office applications family. Eventually, with Windows 10 popularization, OneNote also shipped as a separate application in Microsoft Store, albeit being partially unlinked from Office integrations.
