MATE is a desktop environment for Linux and Unix-like operating systems that was forked from GNOME 2, trying to continue it after GNOME 3 had received bad reception due to trying to provide a simple user experience, and making questionable design decisions to achieve that, such as removing maximize and minimize buttons and simplifying configuration options.
