CHKDSK
(short for check disk) is a disk repair utility included in MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows.
MS-DOS[edit source]
The utility checks for errors and optionally repairs FAT file system structures. It was already included in the first version of MS-DOS. It was later succeeded by Microsoft ScanDisk in MS-DOS 6.2, a disk checking utility that uses a full screen text user interface and also detects physical errors on the hard disk rather than on the file system. Related to its introduction, a notice to ScanDisk has been added to CHKDSK
as well.
Windows NT[edit source]
Windows NT features a more advanced version of CHKDSK
, which, besides repairing FAT file system structures, can also scan and repair NTFS file system structures, as well as locate bad sectors and recover readable information. Compared to the MS-DOS version of CHKDSK
, it contains most of the features of its Windows 9x counterpart, such as the ability to repair physical errors.
