TypeDisk reparing utility

CHKDSK (short for check disk) is a disk repair utility included in MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows.

MS-DOS[edit source]

The utility checks for errors and optionally repairs FAT file system structures. It was already included in the first version of MS-DOS. It was later succeeded by Microsoft ScanDisk in MS-DOS 6.2, a disk checking utility that uses a full screen text user interface and also detects physical errors on the hard disk rather than on the file system. Related to its introduction, a notice to ScanDisk has been added to CHKDSK as well.

Windows NT[edit source]

Windows NT features a more advanced version of CHKDSK, which, besides repairing FAT file system structures, can also scan and repair NTFS file system structures, as well as locate bad sectors and recover readable information. Compared to the MS-DOS version of CHKDSK, it contains most of the features of its Windows 9x counterpart, such as the ability to repair physical errors.
