Windows Vista build 5744 is the official Release Candidate 2 build of Windows Vista, which was released on 6 October 2006.[1] The official download site was closed four days later after reaching a target of 200 thousand downloads.[2]

Unlike the previous Release Candidate, no specific branch was created for the RC2 milestone, with this builds coming from an RTM release branch instead. This, as well as the relatively late branding update compared to previous milestones,[a] suggests that the decision to release another Release Candidate build might have been rushed at the last minute, possibly to reinforce reviewers' and manufacturers' confidence after Microsoft was forced to delay the RTM multiple times.

Changes[edit | edit source]

The Windows SideShow icon has been updated to its final iteration.

Bugs[edit | edit source]

On some computers and virtualizers, the option to apply Aero may be missing. To fix this, open Regedit and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\DWM and set CompositionPolicy to 2. Then logoff and log back on for the changes to apply.

Notes[edit | edit source]

  1. Builds 5738 and 5752, both of which are nearby builds that come from the mainline RTM stabilization development branch (the latter of which was compiled on the same day as this build), lack Release Candidate 2 branding.
