Windows NT 3.1 build 475 is the June 1993 beta of Windows NT 3.1. It was uploaded to BetaArchive on 25 February 2017.[1] Prior to its upload, it was mentioned in an internal Microsoft e-mail from August 1993[2] where it states that the build was delivered to Novell in June 1993 in order to test their NetWare Client for the then-upcoming NT operating system; the e-mail also states that Novell had received the April 1993 beta sometime earlier.

This build refers to itself in the boot screen and Winver as build 4755, and as build 475 on the default desktop wallpaper. It's possible that 4755 was intended to be 475.5. A similar observation can be found within the final build, 3.10.511.1, where the kernel's file version is 3.10.5098.1, perhaps meant to be 3.10.509.8.

On 5 April 2020, ReflectiaX shared a picture of the CD containing the Advanced Server version of this build.

New features and changes[edit | edit source]

  • It is the first known build to use 50 lines text mode for the text mode display during boot and the blue screen of death.
  • The copyright date on the winnt bitmap has been changed from 1992, 1993 to 1985-1993.
  • When booting this build, a message will appear for a short time to press Space to load the Last Known Good Configuration/Hardware Profile menu.
  • The "door" icon on the safe to shutdown screen has now been changed to a "nighttime window" icon, which would be used in subsequent Windows NT builds.
  • New bugcheck codes have been added, and the fatal system trap errors have been removed, with them leading to a new bugcheck, 0x7F.[3]
    • INSTALL_MORE_MEMORY (0x7D)
    • UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP (0x7F)
    • Hardware malfunction. (0x80, later renamed NMI_HARDWARE_FAILURE)
    • SPIN_LOCK_INIT_FAILURE (0x81)
      • In addition, the boot screen message now prints itself as a message stored in the bugcheck message table, being at value 0x4000007E. It is referred to in documentation as WINDOWS_NT_BANNER, although it can be called by the stop code 0x7E. It was reworked during Windows XP's development into SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED, as the no-GUI boot screen prints nothing in that version.
