Windows 98 build 1577 is a beta 2 build of Windows 98. The Pan-European version of this build was uploaded to the Chinese website BetaWorld on 5 May 2022,[1] and then later shared on 17 November 2022,[2] along with Windows Server 2008 build 6001.16637, Windows 8 build 9200.16456 (win8_gdr_soc_intel), and Windows 8.1 build 9468, albeit with files in WIN9X50.CAB being corrupted. An uncorrupt copy of the Pan-European localization is located on the Russian warez CD Новые ресурсы 2 (New Resources 2); the CD was uploaded to the Internet Archive on 15 March 2023.[3]

Changes[edit | edit source]

  • Internet Explorer has been updated to version 4.01.
    • This is the first build to implement the IE4 easter egg, although it works by dragging the IE logo to the globe while holding the ⇧ Shift key. This will open res://shdocvw.dll/eegg.htm (or "IE 4.0 ROCKS!"), which is a page not only showing the names of the developers, but also 18 "Nerd Features".
  • Outlook Express and NetMeeting have been updated and have new splash screens.
  • The final version of FrontPage Express 2.0 is now included.
  • WBEM/WMI 1.0 is now included.
  • Microsoft Family Logon now uses the appearance as seen in the RTM.

Bugs and quirks[edit | edit source]

This build does not have a first boot screen and will show the boot log instead when first booting.

Installation[edit | edit source]

Setup has a WINSETUP.BIN that is not recognized by setup at all times and causes setup to crash on most virtualizers except Microsoft Virtual PC, 86Box, VARCem, and some versions of VMware, due to incorrect emulation of the segment limits of the CPU core. To patch this build to run on any virtualizer, use a WINSETUP.BIN from an earlier build or the RTM.
