Windows 98 build 1538 is an interim build of Windows 98, which was originally scene leaked by warez group GLoW on 12 July 1997. It was later found on the first disc of the Crazybytes 17 warez CD compilation, where it was mislabeled as build 1443.
This is the last build to exclusively brand itself as Memphis, as build 1543 changes most of these references to 98.

- Updated Internet Explorer 4 to version 4.71.1003. On higher color depths, icons now have a more three-dimensional appearance. The previous flat icons are still used on lower color depths.
- Outlook Express now stores messages locally by default.
- The "Users" Control Panel applet received a visual uplift, including a new side graphic.
- Texts of shut down options in the Shut Down Windows dialog box replaced with the ones used in the RTM.
- The Windows Help interface has been overhauled, now using Internet Explorer instead of WinHelp.
Microsoft Family Logon[edit | edit source]
Compared to earlier builds, the logon client received a graphic at the left side of it, which simply shows the Windows logo at the top of the graphic on a white background, while the rest is colored teal.
