Windows 8 build 8176 is a Consumer Preview build of Windows 8, which was uploaded to BetaArchive on 4 January 2019.
It is the last available build of Windows 8 to include a Start button on the taskbar and to play the shutdown sound.
Changes[edit | edit source]
- Similar to build 8140, a new "Windows 8 Beta" branding is used in System Properties and the
winver
banner. However, some parts of the build, including the boot screen and setup, still mention "Windows Developer Preview".
Bugs and quirks[edit | edit source]
Autorun[edit | edit source]
Like in builds 8155, 8161, and 8175.5, the Install now
text on the autorun is in the System font.
USB 3.0[edit | edit source]
This build appears to have a broken xHCI driver, and therefore will crash during setup if USB 3.0 is enabled. Disabling USB 3.0 for the VM (or from BIOS/UEFI, on real hardware) should fix this problem.
DPI settings crash[edit | edit source]
Adjusting the DPI settings will result in a bugcheck after attempting to apply changes.
Intel display drivers[edit | edit source]
It is not recommended to install Intel display drivers due to a compatibility bug that causes the drivers to not yield any graphical output.
