Windows 2000 build 2068 is a build of Windows 2000, which is currently only available in the Server SKU.

New features and changes[edit | edit source]

  • Updated the Server boot screen to resemble the version used in the RTM, but it is labeled "Servers" instead of "Server Family".
  • Added a gradient bar to winver.exe back under the Windows 2000 banner.
  • Changed the hibernating screen text to Hibernating... and the font to "Arial" instead of "Microsoft Sans Serif" as seen in the RTM.
  • Removed the "Beta 3" tag from the logon banners.
  • Removed the "Pre-release" tag from the desktop watermark.
  • The Windows 2000 branding without the SKU name is now used for all SKUs during setup.
  • The shutting down dialog has been updated to resemble the RTM. However, it still reads Writing unsaved data to the disk....
  • Internet Explorer has been updated from 5.0 to 5.01, along with a new banner in the About box.
  • When booting into setup, the notification has been reworded, with the BETA term being replaced with Evaluation.
  • Windows 2000 branding has been added to System Properties.
  • The DirectX Diagnostic Tool (dxdiag.exe) has been added.

Bugcheck codes[edit | edit source]

  • The PNP_FATAL_ERROR (0xCA) bugcheck was changed to the message Plug and Play detected an error most likely caused by a faulty driver.
  • Added an informational message for bugcheck 0xA5 (ACPI_BIOS_ERROR) at 0xDD (BUGCODE_PSS_MESSAGE_A5). This bugcheck code is only used in this version and was removed during Windows XP's development. As Windows 2000 can install without ACPI, these aforementioned bugchecks can only be seen by installing an incompatible HAL on a non-ACPI system.
  • Three message strings related to hardware profiles were added.[1] For the first time, these messages are now allocated out of range from the rest of the bugcheck/message codes, likely to avoid conflicts when adding new codes.
    • HARDWARE_PROFILE_UNDOCKED_STRING (0x40010001) is the "Undocked Profile" string.
    • HARDWARE_PROFILE_DOCKED_STRING (0x40010002) is the "Docked Profile" string.
    • HARDWARE_PROFILE_UNKNOWN_STRING (0x40010003) is the "Profile" string.
  • New bugcheck codes were added:
    • The driver has used an excessive number of system PTEs. (0xD8, later renamed DRIVER_USED_EXCESSIVE_PTES)
    • The driver is corrupting the locked pages tracking structures. (0xD9, later renamed LOCKED_PAGES_TRACKER_CORRUPTION)
    • The driver is mismanaging system PTEs. (0xDA, later renamed SYSTEM_PTE_MISUSE)
    • A driver has corrupted the memory management system PTEs. (0xDB, later renamed DRIVER_CORRUPTED_SYSPTES)
    • A driver accessed a stack address that lies below the current stack pointer of the stack's thread. (0xDC, later renamed DRIVER_INVALID_STACK_ADDRESS )
    • A driver corrupted pool memory used for holding pages destined for disk. (0xDE, later renamed POOL_CORRUPTION_IN_FILE_AREA)
