Windows 11 build 25931.1000 is an Insider Preview build of Gallium, the 24H1 development semester of Windows as a service. It was released to Windows Insiders in the Canary Channel on 16 August 2023, along with its server counterpart.

New features and changes[edit | edit source]

File Explorer[edit | edit source]

Several property fields (e.g., drive information, image dimensions, number of pages) have been re-added to the new Details pane. This change was previously implemented in build 23516.

Shell[edit | edit source]

The ability to label system apps under Start menu's All Apps section, initially implemented in build 23481, has been ported to this build.

Miscellaneous[edit | edit source]

  • The timebomb has been extended from 15 September 2023 to 15 September 2024.
  • The Photos and People apps can be uninstalled manually.
  • Starting from this build, NetBIOS/WINS/mailslot-based methods for domain controller discovery were disabled by default. This behavior can be manually reverted with the BlockNetBIOSDiscovery Group Policy setting.
  • DC locator will automatically download additional information about the child domains in trusting forests and use that information as part of the discovery algorithm.
  • The boot environment now supports DEFLATE compression (type 7) in RtlDecompressBuffer, making use of an unidentified zlib version.

Bugfixes[edit | edit source]

  • Fixed a major issue that was preventing users from connecting over SMB to a third-party storage device using guest (no username or password) credentials.
  • Fixed the issue that was causing the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the system tray on the taskbar to sometimes disappear.

Bugs and quirks[edit | edit source]

  • Adjusting screen brightness may not work on some laptops.
  • The icons on the desktop may appear blank in certain cases. Refreshing the desktop would resolve this issue.
  • Text on highlighted items in Microsoft Management Console and some of its snap-ins may have a yellow color.
  • explorer.exe may throw an Unknown Hard Error error and get stuck in a crash loop when logging in to Safe mode, due to the 0xc0000005 (ACCESS_VIOLATION) exception with faulting module HolographicExtensions.dll.

Updates[edit | edit source]

  • 25931.1010.rs_prerelease_flt.230811-1336 (KB5030120)
    • Released to the Canary Channel on 21 August 2023 (AMD64 and ARM64)
