Windows 11 build 23516 is an Insider Preview build of Nickel, the 22H2 development semester of Windows as a service. It was released to Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel on 2 August 2023.

New features and changes[edit | edit source]

Shell[edit | edit source]

  • The support of JPEG XR high dynamic range (HDR) wallpaper on HDR displays, initially implemented in build 23493, has been rolled out to all users.
  • When doing multitasking activities such as often switching between windows or using Snap Assist, the system will show a notification toast to suggest the screen casting feature.
  • If the optional Wireless Display feature is not installed, an installation reminder will show under the Cast flyout in Quick Settings.

File Explorer[edit | edit source]

  • Several property fields (e.g., drive information, image dimensions, number of pages) have been re-added to the new Details pane.
  • Some small adjustments to the size of elements under the Home page, including reducing the size of the text, have been made.

Settings[edit | edit source]

  • A new option has been added under System > Power & battery > Presence Sensing for automatically dimming the screen when looking away and undimming when looking back.
  • A new option has been added under Personalization > Dynamic Lighting > Effects for automatically setting the main effects color based on the system accent color.

Out-of-box experience (OOBE)[edit | edit source]

The Presence Sensing toggle switch under the Choose privacy settings for your device section, initially implemented in build 23511, has been rolled out to all users.

The following Narrator natural voices have been added:

  • English (India): Microsoft Neerja (Female) and Microsoft Prabhat (Male)
  • French: Microsoft Denise (Female) and Microsoft Henri (Male)

  • Korean: Microsoft SunHi (Female) and Microsoft InJoon (Male)

General[edit | edit source]

Fixed an issue that was causing the Photos app to be pinned to the taskbar automatically after updating to build 23511.

File Explorer[edit | edit source]

  • Fixed an issue where the icons displayed in the tabs in File Explorer could become out of sync with the current folder after navigating.
  • Fixed a memory leak in File Explorer which could cause explorer.exe crashes and other issues over prolonged usage.
  • Fixed an issue that was causing File Explorer to show "Working on it" in an empty folder.
  • Fixed an issue where right-clicking items in the navigation pane wouldn't open a context menu after users changed folders.
  • Fixed an issue where pressing Alt+P and ⇧ Shift+Alt+P wouldn't work when focus was set to one of the images in the Gallery page.
  • Fixed an issue where the Home and Gallery pages could get stuck in the wrong colors if they were open when changing between light and dark mode.
  • Fixed an issue where thumbnails in Gallery might not load after changing the view to a smaller icon size.
  • Fixed an issue where after refreshing the Home page, actions to pin and unpin favorite files might not work.
  • Fixed an issue where the design of the new Details pane was displaying from left to right instead of right to left when using Hebrew or Arabic display languages.
  • The following bugfixes will only apply if the changes to the File Explorer (introduced in build 23466) are enabled:
    • Fixed an issue where setting focus to the address bar by pressing Alt+D, Ctrl+L or F4 wouldn't work.
    • Fixed an issue where typing drive letters, environment variables, and other strings in the address bar wasn't causing suggested paths to appear in a dropdown.
  • The following bugfixes will only apply if the redesigned Home page is enabled:
  • Fixed an issue which could cause explorer.exe to crash when opening the Home page.
  • Fixed an issue where the tooltip would get stuck on the screen when scrolling the Home page with touch.
  • Fixed an issue where collapsing and expanding the sections of the Home pagedidn't always work.
  • Fixed an issue where mouse wheel scrolling wasn't working if the mouse was hovered over the Recommended section of the Home page.

Shell[edit | edit source]

  • Fixed an underlying issue that was causing desktop icons to appear blank in certain cases.
  • Fixed an issue that was causing explorer.exe to crash when opening the context menu.
  • Fixed an issue where the text box for naming newly created files or folders on the desktop was showing in the wrong position (far away or way too close) relative to the thumbnail.
  • Fixed multiple explorer.exe crashes impacting taskbar reliability.

Fixed an issue that was causing certain mouse actions (including resizing windows with mouse) to not work over remote desktop.

Dynamic lighting[edit | edit source]

Fixed an issue where switching user accounts could turn off device LEDs.

Bugs and quirks[edit | edit source]

Shell[edit | edit source]

  • The taskbar may not load correctly when logging in after upgrading to this build.
  • Some non-system apps under Start menu's All Apps section, such as PWA apps installed via Microsoft Edge, may be labeled as system apps incorrectly.

File Explorer[edit | edit source]

File Explorer may crash when dragging the scroll bar or attempting to close the window during an extended file-loading process.

Windows Copilot[edit | edit source]

  • When pressing Alt+Tab ↹ to switch out of Windows Copilot, users may not switch back into it.
  • When first launching or after refreshing Windows Copilot while using Voice access, users may need to use "Show grid" commands to click in the "Ask me anything" box for the first time.

Windows Ink[edit | edit source]

The following issues will only apply if the updates to Windows Ink introduced in build 23481 are enabled:

  • The address box in Microsoft Edge, as well as search boxes and comment fields in Microsoft 365 applications may not work correctly.
  • Windows Ink may not convert handwriting to text into the main content in Microsoft 365 applications.

The Japanese and Chinese IMEs may not work correctly.

Safe mode[edit | edit source]

  • When logging in to Safe mode, explorer.exe may throw an Unknown Hard Error error and get stuck in a crash loop due to the 0xc0000005 (ACCESS_VIOLATION) exception with faulting module HolographicExtensions.dll.
  • Clicking Bluetooth & devices and Personalization pages may crash the Settings app due to an overrun of a stack-based buffer 0xc0000409.
