Windows 11 build 23424 is an Insider Preview build of Nickel, the 22H2 development semester of Windows as a service. It was released to Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel on 30 March 2023, along with build 25330.

New features and changes[edit | edit source]

Widgets[edit | edit source]

The revamped Widgets board, initially introduced in build 25324, has been implemented. This change is only available to a subset of users, but can be toggled on manually by enabling the 43028164 velocity ID.

Settings[edit | edit source]

  • A new option has been added under System > Multitasking to show 20 most recent tabs from apps when snapping or pressing Alt+Tab ↹.
  • The support of Content Adaptive Brightness Control (configurable via System > Display > Brightness & color) has been introduced to battery powered devices.
  • A new toggle "Get the latest updates as soon as they are available" has been added to the Windows Update page for getting the latest updates as soon as they are available.
  • The Bluetooth & devices > Wheel page has been updated to align with the design aesthetics of Windows 11.
  • The performance of search within the Settings app has been improved.

Input[edit | edit source]

The performance when using a high polling mouse while gaming has been improved.

Bugfixes[edit | edit source]

  • Fixed an issue that was causing voice access to take some time to turn on after using the wake-up command.
  • Fixed the issue that was causing an error dialog to pop up when clicking on the "Open File Location" command in File Explorer.
  • Fixed the issue that was causing no action to occur when clicking on the "Remove from list" command in File Explorer.
  • Fixed an issue where Microsoft Edge tabs would show when pressing Alt+Tab ↹ even if System > Multitasking in the Settings app was set to "Don’t show tabs".
  • Fixed an issue where the search icon on the taskbar could end up overlapping the Task Manager icon in the title bar.

Bugs and quirks[edit | edit source]

File Explorer[edit | edit source]

  • The access keys in the XAML context menu may appear inconsistently if no button is pressed. Pressing a button will cause them to reappear.
  • Clicking on the Share command may bring up the Windows share sheet (non-OneDrive) when the file recommendations feature is enabled.

Taskbar[edit | edit source]

  • The search box on the taskbar may be disabled in certain cases.
  • Users may see the daily rotating search highlight for some time before getting the new Bing button back to the search box on the taskbar.

Settings[edit | edit source]

  • When adding a language via the Language & Region page, the installation progress may become hidden, and users may not see install completion for enhanced speech recognition.
  • The Language & Region page may not offer the necessary speech recognition language support for live captions for up to an hour after first login.

Live captions[edit | edit source]

  • The enhanced speech recognition support may not be installed correctly through the Language & Region page in the Settings app on ARM64 devices.
  • Captioning performance may be degraded in non-English languages and missing out-of-language filtering in non-English (United States) languages.

Safe mode[edit | edit source]

  • Quick Settings and date/time clock on the taskbar may be missing due to the Capability Access Manager Service service not running.
  • Clicking Bluetooth & devices and Personalization pages may crash the Settings app due to an overrun of a stack-based buffer 0xc0000409.
