Windows 11 build 22623.870 is a build of Windows 11 2022 Update. It was released to a subset of Windows Insiders in the Beta Channel on 20 October 2022 as the KB5018863 enablement update to build 22621.870 (KB5018499) for new features included, which may not be enabled by default and instead be rolled out.

New features and changes

Shell

• The new Task Manager item in taskbar context menu, previously introduced in build 25211, has been rolled out to a subset of users. It can be toggled on manually by enabling the 36860984 velocity ID.
• The touch gestures feature and their animations with the tablet-optimized taskbar have been improved to work better with the touch.
• The redesigned search entry point on the taskbar, previously introduced in build 25158, has been rolled out to a subset of users. It can be toggled on manually by enabling the 39263329 velocity ID with variant parameters 1, 3 or 5.
  • Alternatively, the ability to show the search icon next to the Widgets button, initially introduced in build 25217, still available but disabled by default.
    • To enable this feature, the 39263329 velocity ID must be disabled first, then use ViVeTool from an elevated command window, enable the 40887771 velocity ID and restart sihost.exe or explorer.exe
    • The search box option does not work anymore, and the search icon will be placed next to the Start button instead of the Widgets icon.
    • This feature is known to lead to repeated Start menu crashes, which must be disabled for the Start menu to be responsive.

Widgets

The following changes to Widgets board's header, previously introduced in build 25227, has been rolled out to a subset of users. It can be toggled on manually by enabling the 40772499 velocity ID:

• The visual appearance has been redesigned with new icons.
• Two layouts for the header placement (banner or sidebar) are available.
• Several shortcuts to personalized news feed have been added.
• The digital clock has been removed.

Settings

The support for new Braille displays and input/output languages in Narrator under Accessibility > Narrator > Braille, previously introduced in build 25193, has been rolled out to all users.

Miscellaneous

• The ability to keep storing biometric data or open the Settings app to delete the data has been added for users that were enrolled in Windows Hello Face / Fingerprint and their faces or fingerprints have not been used for authentication in over 365 days.
• The DriverSiPolicy.p7b for the Windows kernel vulnerable driver blocklist has been updated to include drivers that are vulnerable to Bring Your Own Vulnerable Driver (BYOVD) attacks.
• The OEM control of HVCI enforcement for targeted hardware configurations has been extended.

Bugfixes

• Fixed an issue that was causing explorer.exe to crash when dragging icons in the system tray.
• Fixed an issue that was causing the Microsoft Azure Active Directory Application Proxy connector to fail to retrieve a Kerberos ticket on behalf of the user with the error message is "The handle specified is invalid (0x80090301)."
• Fixed an issue that was causing Windows to remove cached credentials for security keys and FIDO2 On hybrid domain-joined devices.
• Fixed an issue that might cause vertical and horizontal line artifacts to appear on the screen.
• Fixed an issue that was causing title bars to not render when using third-party tools to customize them.
• Fixed an issue that might fail to sync the audio when recording gameplay using the Xbox Game Bar.

General

The audio may stop working in certain cases.

Tablet-optimized taskbar

• The taskbar may sometimes flash when transitioning between desktop posture and tablet posture.
• The taskbar may take longer than expected to transition to the touch-optimized version when switching between desktop posture and tablet posture.
• The taskbar may sometimes stay stuck in the expanded state instead of dismissing to collapsed state when using the bottom right edge gesture to see Quick Settings.
