Windows 10 build 20226 is the fifteenth Insider Preview build of Iron, the 21H1 development semester of Windows as a service. This build was released to Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel on 30 September 2020. One day prior to this build's release, a screenshot of this build was posted to GitHub by a Microsoft employee on 29 September 2020.[1]

Changes[edit | edit source]

  • Windows now notifies users when an NVMe solid-state drive is about to fail. Clicking on the notification or navigating to Settings → System → Storage → Manage disks and volumes → Properties will provide an insight to the current state of the affected drive.
  • Updates to the Your Phone app, including a redesigned settings page.
  • Most of the changes that were introduced to a subset of Windows Insiders in build 20161 are now enabled by default on clean installations. These include the theme-aware Start menu, the removal of the Tablet mode quick action, and the migration of the Control Panel's System applet to the Settings app, and the ability to copy the information in said section of said app.

Findings[edit | edit source]

New out-of-box experience[edit | edit source]

This build contains a new OOBE, with a similar design to Windows 10X's OOBE. On 8 October 2020, community member lucasm posted a video showcasing it on Twitter using build 20231. Although this new OOBE is mostly complete, some sections still use the design of the former OOBE, such as the EULA. To enable it, download the Vibranium Velocity (ViVe) tool, extract the contents from the ZIP file, launch the executable from an elevated Command Prompt window, enable the 26336822 velocity ID and restart. After restarting, unless you have run the command during OOBE, run SysPrep.

Theme-aware splash screens[edit | edit source]

This build also contains redesigned splash screens for UWP apps, which no longer use an accent-colored background and use instead a black or white one depending on the theme. Although they aren't enabled by default, they can be enabled via the Vibranium Velocity (ViVe) tool. To do it, download the tool, extract the contents from the ZIP file, launch the executable from an elevated Command Prompt window, enable the following velocity ID, and restart: 25936164. After restart, the splash screens should be updated. However, this only supports the following apps, meaning that any other app that is not in the list will still have the accent-colored splash screen after enabling the feature:

Bugs[edit | edit source]

  • The update process to this build has a chance of hanging for extended periods of time.
  • Live preview doesn't work for pinned site tabs.
  • Some Office applications may either crash or go missing if you update to this build.
  • There's a chance of randomly encountering a BSOD with the error code KMODE_EXCEPTION when using certain virtualization technologies.
  • There's a chance of randomly encountering a DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION BSOD.
  • The vEthernet adapter used in WSL2 distros can randomly disconnect itself after a certain period of time.
  • When some Insiders updated to this build, they encountered a Compatibility Assistant notification that said “Microsoft Office is no longer available”. Despite the warning, the installed apps from the suite were still available and functional.
